She waved a hand, then sat next to him. “Still are.”

Luc felt the outside of her thigh press against his and tried to ignore the enjoyable sensation that fluttered through him from that connection.

“I’ve had dreams before that seemed like they were telling me something, and they turned out to be true. Like when Tarley was in danger. But this is different. Not like those dreams at all.”

“How?”

“This is… well, besides being in someone else’s dream, those dreams were disconnected. As if I were just an observer. This…” She glanced at him then down at her lap, and he wondered if she was as aware of their touch as he was. Then she said, “You’re so real,” and he thought that might be so.

His heart picked up speed as the other dream—the sex dream—flickered in his thoughts, and he slid his hands over his thighs to keep them busy. “When Nix was caught in the spell, I was able to visit him, to cross between our realm and the enchantment.” He pondered it a moment, staring at the curtains moving back and forth in the soft breeze. “Maybe it’s a little like that?”

“Magic?”

He nodded. “I don’t think I would have been able to do it without Nix allowing it, of course. And I think maybe because I was the one who’d trapped him—my blood—maybe that played a part too.”

A slamming door somewhere caught Luc’s attention, and he turned his head to look for it.

Brinna grabbed his thigh. “No. Stay with me.” Her voice was panicked.

Luc glanced at her hand on his leg and slid his hand over hers, wrapping her fingers with his. “I’m here.” An unfamiliar need to stay unfurled in his chest.

“I’m afraid it isn’t for long, Lucian. And when you’re not with me, I’m alone.” Her eyes filled with tears, breaking Luc’s heart. “My family—everyone sleeps.”

“Brinna–” But he stopped, not sure what he’d intended to say.

The beachside getaway dripped away, melting into the greenery of a summertime forest appearing around them. A faint trickle of water bubbled as bursting pink blossoms rained around them. Luc looked down at their joined hands and saw he was sitting on a chaise. His head snapped up to Brinna next to him.

He’d brought them to the sex dream!

Shit.

Brinna jumped to her feet and spun away, putting distance between them. “Oh. Oh!” She pressed her fingertips to her red cheeks. “Oh.”

“Wait. You know this place?”

Her eyes jumped to his. The color in her cheeks deepened, and she looked away.

“That was real too?” he asked. “Whoa.” He shoved his hands into his hair. “How?”

“That night?—”

His eyes met hers, remembering every single sensation. The kiss. Her skin. The sounds she’d made when she came. His mouth popped open, then shut, but a few beats later, his eyes on her face, he said, “It was a very memorable dream.”

Brinna’s cheeks brightened, and she fanned them with her hands. “You remember?—”

“Every fucking thing.” He expelled a gusty breath. “Fuck. That was… I haven’t stopped thinking about it.”

“Maybe we should try and forget that happened.”

“Sorry, Brin. Can’t. Won’t,” Luc replied.

“I’m not your type,” she pointed out. The fact she’d brought it up again told Luc he’d hurt her.

“If I remember correctly,” he said, smirking. “I set you straight on that point. In fact, you were hard-pressed against some sturdy evidence.” The memory of his cock against her sultry heat warmed the space in his chest, and he had to take a couple of deep breaths to subdue the muscle memory in his groin.

She covered her face with her hands. “I’m so embarrassed.”

As much as he wanted to chase the feelings they’d shared, Brinna’s struggle stayed him. While his first impulse was usually to chase the discomfort away with humor, he found he didn’t want to run from it. He wanted to jump into the moment and face something real with her. The impulse frightened him.
