“We’re gods,” Nix repeated. “I was trapped in a spell. We’ve seen demons and darklings. I can kill someone with the flick of a finger. There have probably been wilder things, yes? So Brinna being in your dreams doesn’t seem all that wild.” He paused, glanced at Luc, then plucked at his pants. “Did she say anything about Auri? Is she okay?”

“Brinna said everyone is asleep. That Scarlett gave them a potion.”

Nix sat back up. “I knew she was responsible.” He looked out at the window a moment, then back at Luc. “Why Brinna? And the dreams?”

“Not sure, but she said she’s always been able to dream. To see things with them.”

Nix tilted his head. “Auri said that about her.” Nix stood, and it was clear he was pondering, thinking it through. “But why you?”

Luc shrugged, unwilling to reveal the first time it had happened, especially considering Nix’s request that Luc not cross any lines with Auri’s sister. “If I could hand it over to you, I would. Take it.”

“Feels like it confirms they’re godblood.”

“That’s what I thought too,” Luc said. “Even if they had magical abilities as sorcerers, it wouldn’t explain your god-yoke.”

“And what is Brinna’s plan?”

“She’s going to try and connect with her mother’s dreams—try and get some answers.”

“And how will she get that information to you? Dreams?”

“It would seem that’s the only way.”

“Will it happen again?

“I don’t know.”

“Okay.” Nix nodded. “Okay.” He paced a few steps, then turned back before his head snapped back to Luc. “What if you can’t get back in? You know, to see Brinna?”

“I don’t know, but it sure would be nice to know if this is a thing. This Dream Walking thing.”

Nix nodded.

“I can’t leave here to find out.”

“But I can.” Nix closed the distance between them and hauled Lucian against him into a hug. “This is the best news I’ve heard all day. Thank you.”

Luc wasn’t sure how it was good news, other than he was able to communicate to a Dream Brinna that may or may not have been real—even if she seemed to be. He didn’t argue, though, more content to have made Nix happy for once. It was, after all, the least he could do.

“You look pale,” Luc observed, tilting his head to look closer at his twin. It was clear that the separation between his brother and Auri was already taxing him. “Do you think the spell is making your separation more intense?”

“I’m fine,” he said, swiping a hand over his chest as if to check. “I’m fine.”

“No. Brother. I can see you’re feeling–”

Sol faded around them as Nix conveyed them away, the rose-gold of Elcadia proper appearing in Sol’s place. The tall spires and steep rooftops dripped into the alabaster marble and limestone of the buildings around them. Cobblestone streets paved the way into the old heart of god city.

“Don’t.” Nix cut him off and waved a hand and started walking. “If we want to change the current circumstances—and we both know I need to in order to save Auri—we need to solve the larger problem. Lexa thinks the Library of Oracles is probably the best place to go.”

Luc nodded. “Okay. Didn’t you already visit? When you were searching for the god-yoke cure.”

“I don’t need to be cured, Luc.” Nix scoffed. “I’m quite content being yoked to Auri.”

“As your current pallor suggests. You look like you might fall on your face.” He reached out to grab hold of Nix’s arm to keep him from it and ignored the weight he felt inside his body.

His brother shrugged out from under his touch. “I’m fine. Yes. I visited the Oracles, but it was a dead end.”
