She was appalled to find all of Lucas’s teammates staring at them with grins on their faces.

“Yeah, man, get a room,” another man said.“You’re making the rest of us jealous.”

“Not a bad idea.”Lucas scooted Felina off his lap and onto her feet, then rose, taking her hand in his.“Y’all have a good evening,” He gave them a mock salute.“Ready to go?”he asked Felina.

She nodded, her cheeks on fire, embarrassed at being the center of attention for the entire barroom.

“Hey, Lucas,” someone shouted.“Does she have a sister?”

Lucas glared at the man.“Shut up, Sin.Even if she did, I wouldn’t wish her on the likes of you.”

The man Lucas had called Sin pressed a hand to his chest.“You wound me.”

“Come on.”Lucas leaned close to Felina.“Let’s get out of here before they get any rowdier.”

As they headed for the door, Gisele raced up to Felina.“You picked a good one.I hope it works out.”She hugged her.At the same time, she shoved something into Felina’s back pocket.“A little protection in case you need it.”Then she stepped back, allowing them to pass through the door and into the parking lot.

Felina drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly. She hadn’t realized just how keyed up she’d been until that moment.Acting like they were already lovers had been intense. And that fake kiss...Wow.That hadn’t felt fake. Not on her part, anyway.

Now, alone with Lucas, Felina wasn’t sure how to act.“Uh,” she struggled for words.“Well, I guess it’s good night.”

He frowned.“Now that I’m your boyfriend, I need to see you safely to your door.”He looked around.“Where’s your car?”

“Actually, I rode with Bernie. But it’s not far to my shop.I can walk.”

“That’s over a mile.”Lucas shook his head.“There’s no way a boyfriend would let his gal walk home in the dark.”He took her hand.“I’ll drive you.”

She gave a halfhearted attempt at pulling her hand free.“That’s not necessary. There are plenty of streetlights to light my way.”

“After that guy pushed you down and was shoved into a vehicle and whisked away…?I don’t feel comfortable letting my teammates walk home alone, much less my girlfriend.”Lucas grinned.

“Still…” she started, “I don’t want to take advantage of your services.”

Lucas stood still, holding her hand.“If we’re going to make this look real, you need to let me act like a real boyfriend.Besides, my job is to have your six, whether it’s to keep the meddling mamas from shoving potential grooms in your face or to keep would-be attackers from taking advantage of a lone female walking across town at night.I’m your man.If you’re afraid I’ll push the limits, don’t worry.”He held up his hand like a Boy Scout.“I promise to see you to your door and no further.”

Felina was a little intrigued by the push-the-limits phrase and possibly a little disappointed he wasn’t going to even try.“Okay.I would appreciate a ride home.I’ve been on my feet all day in the shop.It would be nice not to have to walk that mile.”

He looped her arm through the crook of his elbow and marched her to a giant four-wheel-drive pickup.

She blinked up at it.“This is yours?”

He nodded.“It is.When we heard we would be based out of the bayous of Louisiana, I figured a four-wheel drive might come in handy.I don’t want to get stuck in the mud, and it has a winch in case I do.”

She stared at the door, high above her.“I’ll need a ladder to get up into that thing.”

He chuckled, reached for the door handle and opened the passenger door.A running board dropped down, providing a convenient step that would allow her to climb up into the truck.

“That’s handy,” she commented and reached up into the truck for a handhold.

Lucas grasped her around the waist and assisted her up into the passenger seat.“Need help with the seatbelt?”

She shook her head, her heart beating fast and her breaths coming in shallow gasps. His hands around her waist had been large, warm and strong. Her immediate thought had been of those hands smoothing across her naked skin, cupping her breasts.

Get a grip, girl, she chastised herself. He’s a paid security guard, not a paid escort or gigolo, and this was a legitimate business arrangement that wouldn’t last more than two weeks. Then they’d part ways and never see each other again.

Except he would still be in Bayou Mambaloa between security gigs. She’d bump into him on occasion. All the more reason to keep their interactions platonic, except for a few kisses and...What had he called it?Oh, yeah.PDA.They wouldn’t convince anyone they were an item unless they did some hugging, hand-holding and kissing in public.

Lucas rounded the front of the massive truck, climbed effortlessly into the driver’s seat and started the engine.
