Be one for me.

My smirk slipped.

I wasn’t delusional. There was something there between me and Ariana. I was the magnetic field, and she was gravity, pulling us closer together, strengthening the link we shared.

Problem was, this couldn’t happen.

Secrets shrouded her, and I couldn’t afford any risks. Her combative nature proved volatile, and the last thing I needed was for someone to rock the boat.

And most of all, she was my employee, and I was her boss.

My duty chained me, each responsibility another link in a never-ending chain that tightened its hold around my throat with every passing second.

Did I really need to remind myself of this?

“Where’d you go just now?” Lucy reached for my hand from across the table and pinched my skin.

I shook my head, focusing on the present. Asher had left somewhere, probably to shower, and I hadn’t even noticed.

I was off my game, and I needed to rectify that.

Cocking my head to the side, I studied the mixture in her pot and dipped a finger in. It burned the tip of my middle finger, a big F U to me, but perhaps I needed that.

“I need to fire an employee.”

Lucy narrowed her eyes and swatted my hand away. “You’ve never had a problem with that in the past.”

I tasted the apple mixture, dried my hand on a paper towel she offered me, and took a seat on the bar stool.

“I’ve also never been set up on a blind date by my dad at my best friend’s wedding. There’s a first time for everything.”

“Why?”

“He thinks if I marry a mafia bunny, I’ll be forced to strengthen my connection to the family business.”

Lucy knew about the Romano business. She just didn’t care.

She shook her head. “No, I meant, why are you firing the employee?”

“She’s causing problems for me.”

“For you or the restaurant?”

“For me.”

“What’s she doing exactly?”

Distracting me.

Confusing me.

Turning my world upside down.

I shifted in my seat and replied, “She’s rude.”

“To the customers?”

“To me.”
