Asher shook his head and let it go.

“So, we got security down for the wedding, and the wedding list has been finalized. Are you taking a plus one?”

“No.”

A boyish smirk crossed his pretty boy face, and it reminded me of when we were younger. When I didn’t have the weight of my family’s expectations on my shoulders.

Before Gio and Elsa had betrayed me, and I could call my dad “Dad” without wanting to throw a punch in his face.

Back when Ma got pregnant with Tessie and still lived in New York with us, unhappy but at least pretending to be in a relationship with Gio.

“Are you sure about that?”

“Tell me he didn’t.” I ran a hand down my face. “Tell me Gio didn’t set me up on a blind date with a mafia bunny at your goddamned wedding. For Christ’s sake.”

“I won’t tell you, but it doesn’t make it any less true.”

I swung a fist at the nearest punching bag, which happened to be bright pink and bore a picture of Asher’s face taped to it.

When it stopped moving, I noticed the bruises photoshopped on his face and smirked. “Lucy’s?”

“She won’t take the picture down.”

I followed Asher out the door and into the hallway of his penthouse.

“Remind me to ask her to make me a copy. I’ll frame it on my desk.”

“Consider it done,” Lucy said from behind the kitchen island.

Asher wrapped an arm around her waist from behind and leaned forward to kiss the side of her forehead. “Remind me why I’m marrying you?”

“Definitely for the sex.”

I took a seat on one of the island stools. “You two are disgusting.”

Lucy winked. “Maybe you’ll find love at my wedding. I hear your dad set you up with a date.”

“Fuck you both.”

Asher squeezed Lucy’s waist. “Sounds fun, but double dipping isn’t my thing.”

Lucy turned her head to face him. “Isn’t that a food thing?”

I smirked. “Yes, but it’s also an Asher-and-I-take-turns-with-you thing.”

Lucy was a pretty girl, but I didn’t want her like that. Messing with Asher was just too fun to pass on an opportunity.

Asher leaned around Lucy, grabbed an apple off the counter, and threw it at my head. “Talk about double dipping Lucy again…”

I caught the apple and took a bite, feeling relaxed for the first time in a long time. “You started it.”

“And I’m ending it, children. How is it that you two shed ten years from your ages every time you’re around one another?” Lucy reached across the island, grabbed the apple from me, and cut around my bite. She threw the chopped pieces into her pan. “A gentleman, by the way, wouldn’t make such crude jokes.”

Asher apologized, but I just smirked, remembering a past conversation with Ariana.

A gentleman would.

I’m no gentleman.
