Only when he turned up back in my living room, alone, did I begin to think maybe he wasn’t connected to whoever broke in.

“I shut the back door. It was swinging in the wind. I swear, I’m only here to protect you.”

“You-you have a gun,” I stuttered.

“Yeah, baby. I do. And I’ll use it on any motherfucker stupid enough to try to hurt you.”

I blinked, staring at the man in confusion. “Who are you?”

“That’s a long answer with a lot of explanation. I’ll tell you, but not right now. We have to leave.”

I stood on shaky limbs, my hands slapping the wall as I steadied myself. “I can’t leave my house with a stranger.”

Even a handsome one.

“Is it the gun?” he asked with a growl.

Outside, I heard birds. Tons of them. They sounded like crows.

“Maybe,” I replied, moving a few steps away as he took one in my direction.

“My name is Talon. I’m an enforcer for the Devil’s Murder MC. Ever heard of my club?”

A biker club. I shook my head.

He cursed. “Okay. This is more complicated than I anticipated.” He placed the gun behind his back, tucking it into his waistband. His hands lifted as if that alleviated all my anxiety and fear. “Babe. I need you to listen. You aren’t safe.”

No shit. I figured that out by myself.

“I know,” I answered. Did he think I was stupid?

“Fuck.” His gaze roamed my face. “Abigail Holmes.”

My first and last name rolled off his tongue like he had said it a hundred times before.

“You’re under the protection of my club. I was sent here to keep you safe. I’ve been watching over you for two months now. That’s way more information than we have time for right now.”

Two months?

Wait. He knew my name.

My fingers trembled as I pushed my hair out of my eyes. “I-I don’t know,” I faltered. My knees gave out, and I slid down the wall as Talon rushed to my side.

“Fuck. You’re in shock.”

“Don’t hurt me,” I whimpered as he crouched in front of me, lifting his hand to brush his knuckles across my cheek. That touch, so light and controlled, couldn’t belong to someone who intended to kill me. Right?

“I already told you, beautiful. I’m here to protect you. Nothing more.”

He called me beautiful. I stared into his eyes, searching for the truth. He held my gaze.

“You need to trust me. Your life depends on it.”

“I’m terrified,” I admitted.

“I know, and I’m gonna do everything I can to help you. I swear to fuck I’ll answer all your questions, but we need to leave. You can’t stay here.”

“Where are you taking me?”
