“Fuck, Gail.” She wouldn’t be missing any medication. Not on my watch.

“It sounds worse than it is.”

We finished the food, and I tossed all the trash, sitting against the headboard of the bed with my feet propped up. My boots were unlaced and ready for me to step in, left on the floor within easy reach. I had already placed my gun on the bedside table. While she slept, I would clean it, but not until then.

“There’s only one bed.” She bit her lip.

“Yeah. That’s all that was left.” Shit. I didn’t think about how that might look to her. “I know you needed rest, so I took it. Don’t worry. I won’t be sleeping.”

She arched a brow. “You’re not going to sleep?”

“No. I can’t keep you safe if I’m not awake.”

“Talon.”

“Yeah, beautiful?”

“You can’t stay awake all night.”

“I won’t invade your space.” Leaning over, I pulled down the blanket, gesturing for her to lay down. “Get some rest. We’re not leaving until dark. I paid up the room for two nights.”

“My sleep schedule is off.” She yawned. “I hate that.”

“We’ll fix it later.”

She pulled the blanket up to her chin, resting her cheek on the pillow as she faced me. “Do you think they’ll find us?”

“No,” I replied firmly, hoping to alleviate her fear. “And if they do, I have friends I can call to help us. They aren’t far.”

“I don’t know why I trust you,” she blurted, biting her lip afterward. “You could hurt me as soon as I close my eyes.”

“Do you think I would do that?”

“No, and that’s weird. I know you won’t.” Her eyes closed as she sighed. “I don’t have the energy.”

“To what?” I asked, fighting the instinct to pull her close and hold her while she slept.

“Hmmm?”

She was too tired to finish the thought.

“Night, beautiful. I’m here if you need me.”

She didn’t answer, but I knew she heard me when a smile lifted the corners of her lips.

I slid from the bed and moved across the room, knowing that if I didn’t, I would end up crossing a line I couldn’t return from.

Chapter 5

“Gail. Get up, baby. We’ve got company.”

I jolted awake from my dreams, throwing the covers back as I sat up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes.

“Here. Get dressed. I already took everything else out.”

He handed over my bra and panties, turning his head as I whipped off his t-shirt. Once I had my clothes on and shoes tied, I held out his shirt.

“You might as well wear it. It’s too fucking hot out for my leather jacket, but this will keep you covered more than a tank top.”
