“This has to be worked out between them. It’s not your place, honey.”

“But it’s about me,” I argued.

“And they’ll get to that when they cool off.”

Talon gave a sharp nod to Crow. “I’m leavin’, pres.”

My brother’s shoulders lost a little of their tension, but the anger didn’t disappear from his face or the cold steel of his eyes.

Talon risked his wrath to turn to me. “I’ll be waiting for you, beautiful.” He tapped his heart. “You’re right here.”

God. This man. The way he made me feel. It was special. Intoxicating. Life-changing. “Talon.”

“It’s okay, baby. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He winked, nodded to Crow and Raven, and then strode to the door. He left without looking back.

My hand rose to my chest. “Raven?”

“Yeah, honey?”

“I’m hurting for both of them right now.”

“I can see that. Trust me, it’s gonna be fine.”

Crow watched Talon leave and then marched to the bar, where a shot of whiskey was pushed his way. He tossed it back as Grim joined him.

By his stiff posture, I didn’t think this would be solved overnight.

I tore my gaze away, tempted to run outside to join Talon.

Raven must have noticed where my thoughts led. “Gotta stay here. You leave now, and you make it worse.”

I sagged against the cushion with his reply.

“Talon did what he needed to do,” Raven explained. “He tore off the band-aid quickly so it wouldn’t be as painful later.”

“I don’t get it.”

“You will, honey. I promise. It’s gonna make sense once we’re back at The Roost.”

I hoped he was right. It was going to be a long night without Talon. His warmth chased away nightmares and helped me sleep. Once we got to the Devil’s Murder clubhouse, I hoped this would get sorted out because I wanted to be with Talon.

Crow couldn’t stop us from being together. Right?

FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. Ilit up a smoke outside The Crossroads, delaying the inevitable. I had to leave.

I wouldn’t disobey an order from my pres.

Butfuck, it hurt to ride off without Gail.

“It won’t be easy.”

I turned my head, nearly dropping my cigarette, when I saw Carrion leaving the shadows. “Goddamn. You sneaky fucker.”

“Everyone acts like they don’t know I use the shadows.”

“Yeah, well, I guess it never loses the element of surprise.”

Carrion actually laughed. “Maybe you’re right.”
