He told the truth. I respected that, even if his answer bothered me.

“That’s why you’re the president,” I realized. “You have strong shoulders for that burden.”

Crow sat back, stunned. “That’s what Rook said a month before he died. Word for word.”

“Then I guess we’re both right.”

“Yeah.”

“Austin?”

“No question is a stupid one.”

Good to know.

“Why do the crows follow us?”

My brother finished off a beer and wiped across the back of his mouth. “Tell me what you mean.”

“I hear them around me all the time. They caw and hop around on the roof of my house and at the pharmacy where I work. I see them land when I go to the grocery store or pump gas.”

His brow lifted, but he didn’t say anything.

“I feel soothed by their presence the same way Talon comforts me. But this started a long time ago. I used to notice the crows following Uncle Derek.”

“You’re observant. That’s good.”

“And it’s not an answer.”

“Gail. This will sound crazy.”

“I think I can handle it.”

He didn’t argue.

“The crows are linked to the club and its members.”

Linked? “How?”

“We’re bonded. Soul-bonded.”

I tilted my head, staring at him as I waited for Crow to tell me he was joking. He didn’t.

“A bond? How does that work?”

“Try something for me. Close your eyes.”

“Austin.”

“Do it.”

I closed my eyes, thinking of Talon.

“Tune out everything else around us. There’s no one here but you and me.”

“This is silly.”

“Come on. Try.”
