I slid my hand to the back of the shelf, feeling along the wood with my fingertips. I must have applied the right kind of pressure because I heard a little snap, and the wood brokefree. A considerable chuck flopped onto the shelf. I picked it up, fascinated when I turned it over, and found folded paper notes taped to the back.

“Austin.”

“I see it, Gail.”

I slowly untapped the papers, realizing they were letters. Well, two of them were. The other was some kind of land deed. I handed one of the notes to my brother and opened the one in my hand. Handwriting that I recognized as belonging to Uncle Derek stared back.

Dear Austin,

Son, if you’re reading this, it means I’m already dead.

“This one is yours.”

“Same.”

We switched.

Dear Abigail,

If you’re reading this, I failed you.

Oh, shit.

I sucked in a breath as Crow reached out, clasping my hand.

We read our letters at the same time.

I bet you’re wondering why I kept you a secret.

That answer is simple.

I knew he would come for you.

He? Who?

Undertaker is evil. He won’t stop until he eliminates everyone I love.

That means you. Your brother. Your mother.

I had to keep you safe.

We decided no one could know about you.

Wait. He wrote this letter a year ago. I could see the date.

My father hid me away as a child. This didn’t make sense. The timeline was off.

“He says he met Undertaker as a young man.”

“He did?”

“And he says you’ll be confused, so I need to explain.”

“Okay.”

“Finish your letter, and we’ll talk about it.”

I know all of this will shock you.
