Marisa’s smile became even more forced as she asked in a casual tone, “Um, do your parents know about this? Your true mate and you moving in with him?”

“Yes?” I answered, wondering why I could hear the concern in her voice.

“Um, can I talk to you alone for a minute, Aurora?” She said, moving to me and gripping my arm. “Jim, you . . . entertain Mr. Levi. I just want to tell Aurora about that . . . um, thing . . . We’ll be right back, Mr. Dupont.”

After saying this, Marisa all but dragged me up the stairs to her room, which I’d never been in.

I was surprised when she shut the door quietly behind her like she was trying to sneak into a room with a sleeping patient.

“Marisa?” I was still bewildered by her dragging me up the stairs to her room and I couldn’t understand what she was trying to do.

“Aurora, this room is soundproof. You can tell me the truth. If you need help, I will call Alpha Owen right now. Um, I heard about what happened yesterday. Could . . . could you be making a hasty decision because of embarrassment or anger? Even if someone is your true mate, it doesn’t mean they have your best interests at heart. Are you sure it’s a good idea to move in with him so soon? He’s the one who took you away from the party last night, right? Maybe . . . you need to rethink this again?”

A smile slowly lit up my face as I realized that Marisa’s strange actions were due to concern. She thought I had just met Levi last night, and I’d decided to move in with him today due to shame over what happened between me and the Crawford boys.

“Marisa, stop.” I placed my gloved hands on her shoulder, wondering how she was such a kind person, but she’d raised a daughter like Alice.

“Although I just found out that Levi is my mate, I’ve known him for a long time . . . since I was ten. And my parents know him. He used to be my . . . fighting instructor. So there’s nothing to worry about, okay?”

I watched her face go from worried to relieved before a blush covered her cheeks.

“I’m so sorry for jumping to conclusions. I wasn’t trying to imply that you don’t know how to make the right decisions. I was just worried that you were going to make a mistake.” She said, covering her reddened cheeks with the palms of her hands.

I looked into her beautiful brown eyes and smiled. “I know. Thank you very much for your love and care, Marisa. It’s been a pleasure living here all this while. You’re a great foster mother.”

She blushed again and gave me a sweet, shy smile as she grabbed my glove-covered hands. “You’re a great kid, too. I wish you a happy mated life.”

I smiled. “Thank you. Don’t start wishing me a happy mated life like I’m going away forever. I’ll visit you often to hang out, even though I don’t live with you anymore and I’ll surely invite you to my official mating ceremony.”

“Great! I’m looking forward to it. I’m really going to miss you.” She said, swiping at the tears spilling down her face.

I embraced her, making sure that our skins didn’t touch while thinking of the moments we sat together in the evenings watching movies together. The memories that flashed through my mind made me realize how close I’d become to her in the past several weeks that I stayed in her home.

“Thank you for making your home a second home for me.”

Aurora

After leaving the Davis home with some of my essential stuff, Levi arranged a time with Marisa so local movers could come over to move the rest of my stuff to his apartment. Then I exchanged hugs and air kisses with Marisa and Jim while promising to visit often.

My next stop was Nyra’s house. I wanted to check on her because we hadn’t seen each other since the party on Sunday when Angelique separated us. I also wanted to speak to her about her last meeting with Angelique. I knew that Chief Perez had interrogated her about Angelique’s death, but I also wanted to know if she noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Levi dropped me off at Nyra’s before going to get some necessities at the mall.

After knocking on the door, Nyra’s father, Mr. Sameera, was the one who let me in. Although something about him looked different today, he still had the same kind smile on his face.

“Good day, Mr. Sameera. How are you doing?” I greeted.

“I’m good. How are you?” He asked as he stepped away from the door to let me in.

“I’m good, too. Um, can I see Nyra? I haven’t seen her since yesterday and I wanted to check up on her.” I said.

“Oh, good. Well, she’s been locked up in her room all day since she came back from the police station. You can go up to her room. Maybe she’ll cheer up when she sees you.”

I nodded and offered him a warm smile before making my way up the stairs and heading for Nyra’s room.

When I got to Nyra’s room, I met the door open and Nyra was seated on the floor, creating an intricate domino run.
