Aurora

When I ended my call with Daddy Keane, I went back to the car and found that Levi was awake. The Crawfords had all left as well. When Caden had offered to stay with me, I’d overheard Alpha Owen order him to get in the car, making me realize that even though he was grateful to me, Alpha Owen didn’t approve of his sons being in a relationship with me.

And that was fine by me.

Even though I had feelings for them, I was really over any idea that Caden was as great as he seemed when I first agreed to be his girlfriend. Whenever I remembered how he’d looked down at me last night at my lowest moment, I didn’t want to be near him.

The only person I needed to avoid was Aiden. Although he’d turned away and hadn’t defended me, he didn’t attack me with his words, even after I confessed that everything Mateo had said was true.

I didn’t know where Caden and Mateo got their paranoid feelings that every girl who approached them was after their money or their status, but I wasn’t interested in being distrusted or disrespected the way they disrespected me the night before.

“Are you okay?” I asked as I went to stand in front of Levi where he was seated in the car’s backseat with the door open.

“Mm-hmm,” He said, turning to face me as he grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips, leaving a kiss on my palm. “Let’s go get an early dinner?”

“Sure, I’m hungry. After dinner, let’s go meet with the Davis family and check on my friend. Are you up for it?” I asked, moving closer, and placing my index and middle fingers on the inside of his wrist to check his pulse.

Unlike me, using his instinctual magic always exhausted him, leaving him in a weaker state for days.

“You can go back to the apartment to get some rest. I’ll call Joel and—” I started saying.

He cupped my face in his hands. “No need. I can drive just fine. I’m a vampire-mage, not a human. A little fatigue doesn’t mean I can’t drive a car and move around. Besides, I’ll go wherever you go. You’re the queen and I’m your knight, remember?”

When he referred to the childish concepts of the queen and knight, which I was very fond of using when I was younger, a blush colored my cheeks and a small smile curled the corner of my lips. When he kissed me on the forehead, I moved closer to him and buried my face in his chest to take solace in his rich, ginger scent.

After dinner, we drove straight to the Davis’ home to meet them.

Unfortunately, Alice was the one who opened the front door when we knocked and she made sure she was rude about it as a sneer appeared on her face when she saw me.

“Alice, who’s at the door?” I heard Mrs. Davis, Marisa, ask.

Alice looked at me with a smirk as she answered. “It’s Aurora and a strange man.”

I rolled my eyes at her as Marisa’s voice drew closer. “Aurora, dear, why are you knocking? You should have just come in. Ignore Alice’s attitude. Come in, come in.”

Marisa was as nice as before and I couldn’t help wondering if she hadn’t heard about the ‘video’ from Alice or if she’d heard but didn’t care.

She ushered us into the living room, getting me a Diet Coke and getting Levi a glass of water.

“Marisa, this is Levi Dupont, he’s my friend—”

Levi interrupted me. “I’m her true mate.”

I ignored Alice and Marisa’s surprised gasp and stared at him with a slightly raised brow, wondering why he was revealing this to the Davis family.

All I received from him was an innocent smile and a shrug, which made me realize that he was saying this in front of Alice for Aiden and Caden’s benefit. I barely resisted the urge to roll my eyes at him before giving Marisa an awkward smile when I saw the shocked look on her face.

Marisa stared at both of us and asked, “Really?”

“Yes. She just found out yesterday, so it’s taking a while for her to come to terms with it.”

“Oh . . . oh I see,” Marisa said, nodding her head with a forced smile. “Well, I’m happy for you, Aurora. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Levi Dupont.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you too, Mrs. Davis,” Levi said in a pleasant tone as if he didn’t notice Marisa’s awkwardness.

Ignoring the awkwardness, I continued speaking, “Um, Marisa, I wanted to come over to let you know that I will be moving in with Levi. He has an apartment on the outskirts of Crawford Town and—”
