She looked doubtful. “Not really. When I saw him once in town, he looked so cold and indifferent.”

“Yeah, well, maybe my pretty face convinced him to be nice to me.” I joked, earning a bop on the nose in response.

“He knows my Alpha.” I didn’t want to lie to Nyra, but I couldn’t tell her the truth, so I told her an iota of it without mentioning that my Alpha was also my father.

“Oh, I see.” She said.

We both sat together, leaning on each other with my head on Nyra’s shoulder and her head on mine before she held my head and placed it gently on her duvet again. “I don’t know why, but . . . something about you makes me feel better. I have been feeling awful all day and being around you just makes everything better.”

I grabbed her hand and squeezed it. “Well, I’m glad I could help.”

She stared at me with bright eyes and I couldn’t help the smile that curled the corner of my mouth at the sight of the light in her eyes.

Then she returned to the center of her room where the dominoes were arranged and kneeled right beside them. She took a deep breath and knocked over the first domino. The dominoes toppled over one by one, creating a beautiful chain reaction. We glanced at each other and smiled before turning to watch the domino run unfold.

“That makes me feel good every time,” Nyra said, rising to her feet and unplugging her charging phone to take pictures of the toppled dominoes.

I stood up and joined her, taking a couple of pictures of the spiral domino run pattern.

“Oh, I wish I’d taken a picture of the tiles before you toppled them,” I muttered as I sat back on the floor cross-legged.

“Then let’s do another one? Do you want to do a sleepover?” She asked, looking at me expectantly.

“I wish, but I have to go back now.” I waved my phone in the air. It had vibrated once when Levi got back from shopping, so I knew Levi was parked nearby waiting for me. “My . . . friend is waiting for me outside.”

“Since when did you have a friend other than me?” She asked, looking down at me, her eyes looking darker.

I looked away, assuming that her eyes looked that way because of the fast-fading daylight coming in through the window behind her.

“He’s a friend from outside Crawford. I’ve known him since I was ten,” I said, looking outside the window where the fading light of the sun was still giving the sky an orange-yellow tinge.

“He’s closer to you than me?” Nyra asked, kneeling so we were at eye level and I couldn’t avoid her gaze.

“He’s my true mate,” I said, looking away again.

“Wait . . . you have another . . . a true mate?”

“I just found out yesterday. My dad made him keep it a secret.” I said with pursed lips.

She leaned back and rested her head on her duvet. “That . . . That’s just . . .”

After a few seconds of silence, she asked, “You didn’t know he was your true mate?”

“I suspected, but he . . . no, he and my father told me he wasn’t.” I sighed, “It was for valid reasons, though, so I can’t blame them. I just wish I’d known before I got involved with the Crawford boys.”

“So, what are you going to do?” She asked, staring at me intently. “I mean, about the Crawford boys?”

“Avoid them like crazy, I guess. I still have feelings for them and I want to get rid of those feelings.”

“I haven’t fallen in love before . . . but . . . I hope you can sort this out.” She said with a light, encouraging smile.

I met her eyes, which were a familiar shade of light brown, and smiled. “Me too.”

“Just let me know if you need any help and I’ll gladly help you.” She assured me with an infectious smile.

I offered her a bright smile in return. “I know.”
