“So the witches may not be doing this voluntarily?”Rebecca asked.

“Very likely,” I answered with a nod.

“What if they struck a deal with the witches instead?”Levi asked, flicking his pen around with his index and middle fingers.

I tilted my head and thought about it for a few seconds by reassessing Alpha Juan’s memory. It didn’t seem like that, but it was also possible.

“That’s possible, too,” I admitted with a shrug.

Caden, Levi, and I were in Caden’s study talking to Rebecca, Victoria, and Alpha Timothy about my findings over an audio call on the Supernatural Council servers.

“Are we still going with the previous plan to wait until the handler brings the witch over to compel Alpha Timothy’s pack observer before we apprehend them?”Levi asked.

“Yes.”Rebecca and I answered at the same time.

“We could save ourselves some time by capturing the handler and interrogating him, yeah?”Alpha Timothy suggested.“The Alphas Forum meetings have already progressed from everyone sharing how the Pack Observer Law has affected their pack to Alphas sharing their opinions on how they think the Alphas Congress can get rid of the law faster. As someone who grew up under the incompetent hands of a useless Alpha who did anything he wanted before the enforcement of that law, I’d rather not go back to the dark days without the Pack Observer Law.”

Caden nodded.“I think Alpha Timothy is right. If things continue as they are, the Alphas Congress will send letters to the organizations involved in establishing the Pack Observer Law to request a repeal of the law.The UN and the Supernatural Council will have to send a representative to listen to the reasons for the repeal and we must have concrete evidence to shut the Alphas Congress’s request down. Our best evidence is bringing over someone involved in the operation of compelling pack observers as proof so we can get more time to investigate this matter.”

“Hey, you sure have a good head on your shoulders, Caden. It’s no wonder your father is so ambitious.”Alpha Timothy commented with a smile in his voice.

However, Rebecca rejected Caden’s suggestion.“Yes, but that man is just a handler. If it’s true that we’re dealing with an organization, the witch he’s handling may not even be the same witch Alpha Dean used to compel his pack observer.Plus, once the Alphas involved know that we have an inkling of what’s going on, they’ll hide all evidence of their involvement. Before this case can be revealed, we need to know what organization is involved, where the organization is getting these witches from, whether the witches were voluntarily recruited or not, and what Alphas are involved in this.”

“Based on our experience with these kinds of organizations, if we take the handler first, the organization will call back all handlers and witches and disappear. It’s also very likely that the handler in Alpha Juan’s memory is not the witches’ real handler. He sounds more like an agent. He is probably meeting Alpha Timothy because he’s a disposable agent and doesn’t know a lot of important information about the organization.”Levi explained.

“So we’re still going with the previous plan?”Alpha Timothy asked.

“Yes,” Victoria and I responded.

“Mm-hmm, we just need to train you on how to evade mind-readers like this ‘handler’,” Rebecca declared.

“I think Levi could participate in this impromptu training,” I suggested.“What do you think, Rebecca?”

The reason I made this suggestion was because Levi had experience evading Daddy Keane’s mind-reading.Many times, he’d helped me get away with several things with this skill, which was amazing in contrast to my inability to hide anything from my father.

“I think you’re right. He has a lot of experience trying to hide his thoughts from Keane.”Rebecca shared.“Alpha Timothy, I’ll also send you a couple of notes from Keane on techniques he’s seen people use that are effective.”

“Ok, thanks.”Alpha Timothy said.

“We should be the ones thanking you.Thank you for your dedication to our cause.”Rebecca said.

After we ended the group call, Caden and I left Levi in Caden’s noise-insulated study to continue speaking to Alpha Timothy and headed to the kitchenette in his room to make some sandwiches.

“Stop pacing,” Aiden said.

I stopped and sat on the floor cross-legged for a few minutes, but the worry that pushed me to pace earlier made me continue pacing.

I didn’t stop pacing until Mateo stood up from where he, Caden, and Aiden were seated watching me wear a hole into Caden’s carpet, and embraced me from behind. He wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me off my feet before striding back to sit on Caden’s bed with me seated on his lap.

Levi, who was lying on the only couch in Caden’s hotel room and staring at the ceiling, said, “Stop worrying so much. What will happen will happen.”

However, his words were even less reassuring than Aiden’s.After all, he could pretend to be calm, but the swinging movements of his feet gave away his anxiety.

“What if we didn’t find all the information we needed before we sent Alpha Timothy over? What if the mind reader finds out that Alpha Timothy is working for the Supernatural Council?Or what if there’s someone else meeting with Alpha Timothy other than the hooded man?Or what if I didn’t see an important memory ...”I asked, staring down at my hands that were enveloped in Mateo’s.
