I meet his gaze, and when I see the confusion in his eyes, it hits me.

"You forgot," I say softly, and for a moment, I feel numb. My screams, my pain, none of them were important enough for him to remember.

I had screamed myself hoarse calling him. I still remember that day.

And he just forgot it?

The pain is a cold one, piercing deep inside of me.

"Some fated mate you are," I mumble. He's like everyone else, ready to turn a blind eye when it suits them.

"Cynthia?"

This time when I lift my head, my heart is cold. "I should get going now."

I climb off the bed, and he stops me, stepping in my way, "What did you mean you asked for my help?"

I gaze up at him, dimly wondering why he looks so alarmed. "Does it matter? You forgot. It was a long time ago."

"Remind me," he says fiercely.

My wolf is curling up inside of me, quiet, subdued.

"If it didn't matter then," I reply, my voice tired, "then why would it matter now? Please get out of my way. I have to go."

The door opens, and Lydia enters. "What's going on?"

"I'd like to go home now," I murmur, feeling drained.

"Not until I patch you up," she says with a stern edge. "Out with you, Adam."

Adam looks reluctant but leaves. I sink back onto the bed. "I really want to go home."

"I understand. But I have to ask you a few questions."

I meet her gaze. "If it's about Norman and Jonathon, I can't answer them. I'm sorry."

The healer gives me a long look before pressing her lips together, displeased. "I can't force you to tell me anything, Cynthia, but I'm worried about those scars on your back."

"I don't want to talk about them."

She opens one of the cupboards in the corner and prepares a tray, her back to me, "Sometimes it's important to talk about these things, Cynthia. That's why healers are here."

I'm quiet.

A blood debt isn't something I can talk about so casually. And even if Lydia had an equal standing to the alpha, Jonathon is still her alpha. There's a lot of harm he can cause her without gettinghis hands dirty. She's already gotten on Jonathon's bad side to quite an extent.

"I'm okay." I smile at her now. It's a weak smile, but I don't know what else to do.

She sighs, patching me up. Once she's done, she pats my cheek, "Alright, sweetie, I'll believe whatever you want me to, but I still expect you to show up for the checkups, and I'll call you so that I can help you shift. You just have to try and center your wolf. It's not hard, but we'll work on it together."

She opens the door for me, and Adam's waiting for her.

"Make sure she gets home safe," she orders, and Adam gives her a smile.

"Of course."

"Where's Jonathon?" I look around.
