Stronger.

Less afraid.

“Your family’s going to think we’re having sex in here,” I said, finally lifting my face from his neck and wiping my eyes.

He dried one of my tears with his thumb as he cradled my cheek in one of his palms. “Good. Let them.”

I nodded, and he leaned his forehead against mine. My eyes closed again, and we breathed together for a few minutes before I finally felt steady.

Zander squeezed my ass lightly as I got off his lap, and his eyes moved over my figure while I got dressed. He pulled me in for one last hug before we went back out to face his family together, and I felt settled.

Or at least,moresettled.

As settled as I could get with Evan basically hunting me.

MILEY

We really did endup spending the weekend hiking and biking. The ski resort had lifts running up the mountain, carrying the bikes up for us, so it wasn’t terribly difficult. The guys left us in the dust a few times, but they were always grinning so broadly when we caught up that none of us minded.

We were putting the last of our bags in Bash’s Hummer, after saying goodbye to Anastasia and Eldrich, when a text vibrated my phone.

I pulled it out, and my heart nearly stopped.

The message was from an unknown number.

And it was an image of Charlie—Charlie’s body, with his severed head beside it.

Beneath the picture, there were two words:

You’re next.

I dropped the phone, scrambling backward. Panic had me gasping for air, grabbing at my chest. Zander caught my waist. “What happened?”

“What is it?” Brynn grabbed the phone off the dirt. Her face went pale, her gaze jerking from the phone to my face. “Fuck.”

Bash plucked the device from her hand, and snarled down at the screen.

Zander looked over Bash’s shoulder, swearing as soon as he saw the image. “They’re in my system. I blocked her phone from receiving texts from unknown numbers.”

He was in the Hummer a heartbeat later, his laptop open and his fingers moving over the keys.

“What was the text?” Tatum demanded.

“Charlie’s dead,” I said, my stomach clenching.

Bash lifted his phone to his ear, growling, “Everyone get in, now.”

None of us protested for a second.

Rafael climbed into the back seat, calling an ally and leaving Tatum, Brynn, and I to huddle together in the middle. My heart was still racing, panic curled in my belly.

“My statement plan isn’t going to work,” I whispered to the girls, as Bash hauled ass down the highway. “He could really kill me.”

“Don’t talk like that. We’re not letting you die, Miles,” Tatum said harshly.

“Don’t talk about dying when I can’t argue with you,” Zander growled from the front seat. “Someone else kiss her for me. Someone without a dick.”
