Brynn rolled her eyes at me, but kissed my cheek, taking my hand and lacing her fingers through mine. “We’re going to be fine. No panicking allowed.”

“Easier said than done,” I whispered. “Where are we even going to go?”

“Your place,” Bash said. “They might have gotten into the system, but the security on your house is locked tight. I’ve had two teams on it since you moved there.”

I blinked. “I never saw anyone.”

“That’s the point, Miles.”

That was fair, I supposed.

The minutes crept by slowly, and when we finally reached the house, my breathing was even again.

Bash parked in the driveway, and two massive, armed men came out of the bushes. One nodded at Bash, and he dipped his chin.

“The house is clear. We’re going in.”

Fear clenched my middle.

Bash opened the door, waving Brynn from the Hummer. She slipped out without a problem, and he gestured for me to follow.

“Go ahead,” Tatum murmured, nudging my back lightly.

Zander stepped around Bash, and I couldn’t help the relief that sagged my shoulders. He leaned into the vehicle just longenough to grab me off the seat, and held me to his chest as he hauled me inside.

“I can walk,” I said, though my body was shaking so badly I thought it might’ve been a lie.

“I know you can.” He squeezed my ass lightly, and didn’t set me down until we reached the couch. My butt met the cushions, and he kneeled in front of me, taking my face between his hands. “I need you to trust me, Sweetheart. Can you do that?”

My head bobbed.

“I found them in my system. They don’t know I have them, and they won’t until it’s too late. You’re going to call Evan and tell him that you’re scared, he won, and you’ll meet him at the nightclub. Then you’re going to stay here while my brothers and I kill him. Got it?”

“I don’t want you putting yourself in danger,” I whispered.

“Your life is connected to mine now, and you know I won’t risk you. You’re going to have to trust me.”

The words were a repeat of what he’d already said, but that didn’t make them any less true.

I had to trust him. Not just to trust that he’d protect me, but to trust that he’d protect himself for me, too.

“Are you sure it’ll work?”

“Yes.” His lips brushed mine. “Stay here. Turn on a movie. I’ll be right next to you when it’s time to call him. You’re safe, Sweetheart.”

With that, he mussed the probably-lopsided bun on my head, and strode out of the room.

Brynn sat down on one side of me.

Tatum sat on the other.

Both of them took my hands, but none of us looked for a remote.

“How do you handle it when you travel with them?” I asked Tatum. “Aren’t you scared to death?”

“Sometimes.” Her voice was quiet, but unlike mine, it didn’t shake. “The thing is, these guys have been doing this for a long, long time. They know how to kill vampires better than almost anyone, and the majority of vampires have no idea what to do with a demon. Most of the time, the risk is minimal, and they are very, very careful.”

“The fear will kill me,” I said.
