“Who was that?” Zander set a duffel bag on the bed. We were going to have to make a trip back to the apartment for my freezer and blood, but it could wait.

“Brynn. I forgot about our self-defense class tonight, so I have to get ready and go quickly. Before you insert yourself again, youcan’t join us there. It’s women-only. And Brynn needs me right now.”

“Because of August?”

“Because out of all of us, she’s the one who wanted to be mated to an immortal. Her brothers are dragons, so they’re all going to live forever. Right now, she’s on a human timeline.”

Zander’s forehead creased. “Damn.”

“Yeah.” I finished putting my last hangers up, then grabbed a pair of workout clothes. After shutting the door, I changed quickly, and headed out.

My combat boots were the only accessible shoes, so… combat boots it was.

“Your car’s still at the club,” Zander said, before I stepped out of the room.

I stopped in the doorway.

He was right.

We’d never gone back for it.

Guess I was walking. I didn’t know the area well, but I’d figure it out.

“My keys are in the cupholder. Take the truck.” He continued unpacking.

I studied Zander for a long moment and finally said, “Thanks.”

He nodded, and I slipped out.

Brynnand I pulled into the parking lot from opposite directions, and she waved at me. I waved back. We parked a few spots away from each other, and she met me outside Zander’s truck.

“New ride?” she teased.

“Just drove it off the lot today.” I feigned brushing lint off my shoulder, and she laughed.

The class started, and we paired up together. When Tatum was in town, we rotated which of the three of us had to work with a stranger for the night.

We didn’t talk about my new situation during the class, but when we were buckled into her car, she couldn’t resist any longer.

“Have you drank from him yet?” she asked, pulling out of the lot.

“Not from the vein. I feel like I’ll probably get addicted if I do.”

“You’re already addicted.

I made a face. “Don’t remind me.”

She grinned. “Has he asked to drink from you?”

“No. I don’t think he will, based on everything. I don’t know if he’d even say yes if I offered—and I don’t want to offer. It would only make the situation worse if he was reliant on me too.”

“It would give you stability, though,” she pointed out.

“It would trap me.” I sighed. “I already feel trapped by the bloodlust and hunger. The potential mate thing is just icing on the cake.”

“I’m sorry.” She patted my arm. “I’ll buy the ice cream tonight to make up for it.”

I snorted, catching the playfulness in her expression. “Thanks.”
