“You know, I still can’t believe that you and Tatum arebothmated to Villins. What are the odds? That has to be fate.”

“Or bad luck.”

She laughed, parking in front of the ice cream truck. We could’ve just walked there, but after the self-defense class, we were lazy. “Seriously, Miles. They’re good guys. Being Zander’s potential mate is a hell of a lot better than being some random human guy’s potential mate. At least you know he won’t let you starve.”

“I know. It could be much worse.”

“You could be human, knowing you’ll have to grow old and die while all the people you love live on without you,” she said, her smile fading.

I caught her hand and squeezed. “If fate’s involved, I’m sure there’s something else in the cards for you. Maybe some hunky werewolf guy is going to drag you to his pack and get you all barefoot and pregnant.”

Her smile returned, though it was small. “Wolf pups would besoadorable.”

“Undoubtedly.”

She hesitated, then asked me quietly, “If a few more years pass by and I’m still the only human, will you turn me?”

I grimaced. “Brynn…”

“Just think about it,” she said quickly. “You don’t have to agree to anything. Just consider it.”

I nodded.

Dragging someone into life as a vampire was one of the cruelest things I could possibly do. She didn’t understand the physical, mental, and emotional strain it would put on her.

But at the same time, it was her life. Who was I to tell her how to live it?

And if I was in her position, wouldn’t I want the same thing?

We got ice cream, picked up the truck, and headed back to Zander’s house. I felt like I owed him for letting me drive his truck, so I grabbed some ice cream for him on the way out. I hadn’t seen anything but chocolates in the box of candy he’d ordered from my store, so I picked out two different chocolate pints and hoped for the best. One had cookie chunks, and the other had streaks of marshmallows and bits of chocolate.

“Zander?” I called out, when we made it into the house. Brynn was oohing and ahhing over everything, looking around without waiting for a tour.

“In my office,” he called back.

He’d shown me that one earlier, so I knew where to look.

I dug around in the kitchen until I found a spoon, while Brynn opened the back door and stepped outside to see the backyard. “Brynn’s here,” I said as I opened the door. “She’s—” I cut myself off, halting in the doorway.

Zander was in a reclining chair, his arm draped over the armrest, and a needle buried in his skin. It was connected to a tube, which was connected to a bag.

A blood bag.

A gorgeous young woman wearing a t-shirt for Scale Ridge University leaned up against the wall nearby. She was gorgeously curvy, with brown skin and crazy-thick eyelashes. Her gaze was fixed on Zander, until it lifted to me.

He held his phone in his free hand, but grinned when he saw me. “Is that ice cream?”

My gaze was glued to the college girl. I clutched the ice cream to my chest, not sure what question to ask. Or how to ask it without sounding like I was possessive of him.

“Miles, this is my phlebotomist. She drains my blood for you. Phlebotomist, this is Miley.”

It didn’t pass my notice that he didn’t label me as his friend, girlfriend, fiancée, or mate. Just Miley.

“My name’s Julia. I’ve told you that a dozen times.”

The phlebotomist sounded annoyed.

I’d be annoyed too if I told some bastard my name and he still didn’t commit it to memory.
