Charlie blinked.

And then blinked again.

He leaned back in his chair, his lips curving in a grimace. “Damn.”

“I know.”

“Youdon’tknow.” He studied me.

I wrapped my arms around my abdomen, my stomach still churning.

His gaze finally lifted to Sebastian. “Do you know who’s supplying her blood?”

“I don’t. Zander pays someone.”

“Can you find him?”

“Of course.” Sebastian’s voice didn’t hold any doubt. It never did. “I’m going to need a reason, though.”

Charlie was silent for another minute.

“Just tell us,” I said, the exhaustion in my voice pretty damn loud.

“The only reason a vampire wouldn’t be able to stomach drinking from humans at random, is if they’ve drank from a potential mate.”

It was my turn to blink.

“Fuck.” Sebastian voiced the loudest word running through my mind.

“Yeah.” Charlie was on the same page too.

“How do we fix me, then?” I finally asked. “I don’t want a mate. I definitely don’t want to rely on one person for blood.”

“There’s no fixing you after you’ve found a potential mate. If you stop drinking their blood, it’ll take about a decade for your body to accept that you’re not sealing a bond with them, so your tastebuds adjust.”

“Adecade?” I demanded.

“Yes.” Charlie spread his hands over the desk. “I don’t know if a young vampire can even survive on anyone else’s blood after tasting their potential mate’s. Your body is still adjusting, and your mate’s blood is likely what it both needs and craves.”

“That’s bullshit,” I protested, turning to look at Sebastian. “It’s bullshit, right?”

I definitely didn’t imagine the desperation in my voice.

“No. A demon who drinks from a potential mate deals with the same cravings, for the same amount of time.” Sebastian didn’t hesitate, his thumbs already moving over his phone as he texted someone.

Probably Zander, if I had to guess.

I turned back to Charlie. “There’s got to besomeway to fix me. I can’t expect the Villins to pay some guy to feed me for the rest of my life. I need security, and stability.”

“Seal the bond,” Charlie said simply. “Turn your human donor into a vampire, and he’ll crave you as deeply as you crave him.”

I scowled. “That’s not an option.”

“It’s theonlyoption, Miley.”

I squeezed my eyes shut.

“Zander isn’t answering his phone,” Sebastian said. “I’ll drop you off at the apartment building and stop by his house after. We’ll set up a meeting with your donor sometime tomorrow.”
