"It's nothing we can't handle," Runes assures her confidently. "I had you poking around because I didn't want them hearing I was looking into things."

Boss nods in understanding, her jet black hair swinging over her shoulders. "Smart. It would only cause more issues if they caught wind of you digging."

Runes grins wryly, "Exactly. So, what did you find?" His tone is eager, yet I know him better than that. There's concern beneath his words.

There's a brief moment of silence before Boss begins, "Roque was obviously killed, leaving the Culebra cartel without a leader for a full twenty-four hours. He has a half-brother, Luis, who stepped in as soon as they discovered Roque was murdered. Luis has been leading over the past few weeks, and vowed to take down whoever was responsible for his brother's death. Now, Luis and Desiderio didn't have a close relationship. From what I can tell, his vow is nothing more than a political ploy to get lower level members of the cartel to respect him as their new leader."

Runes narrows his eyes, "How did you get this information?"

She snickers, seemingly amused by something. "I brought it up to Liam when I was in a meeting with him."

"Mackenzie?" Runes furrows his brows, recognizing the name.

Liam Mackenzie is the head of the Irish mafia, and Boss' club does work for him.

Boss speaks confidently. "Yeah, and he's the one who told me everything about the Culebra cartel. You said something earlier about Roque being involved in the child trafficking, but it wasn't just Roque. The entire cartel deals in it and is very well aware. It's why Liam refuses to make any deals with the Culebra cartel."

Runes voice is both frustrated and curious. "How the hell do you know all this?"

Humor dances in her tone. "I already told you, I spoke to Liam. I keep the Irish happy so occasionally we'll share information. He told me everything he knows about the cartel. He told me Luis was in charge, that Luis found his brother dead, all of that."

"I appreciate you finding out this information for me."

"Don't sweat it, it's what allies are for. I'm sure I'll be reaching out at some point so you can return the favor. Until then,"

"Yes, you will. Bye." Runes taps on his mouse to end the call and looks right at me. "Well, that was a lot of information."

I shake my head in a mixture of disbelief and shock. "Well, we now know who's in charge of the cartel."

Runes nods, clearly not pleased with this new information. "Yeah, his brother. This is going to be much messier than I originally thought."

I take in a deep breath before replying, "Messing with anyone's family causes issues. We didn't know Roque had a brother."

The weight of the situation weighs heavily in the air between us.

Runes shakes his head in frustration, "It never crossed my mind to even dig deeper. I knew his parents were dead, and he told me he grew up as an only child. If I had the slightest inkling I would have made sure we dug deep."

Leaning back in my seat, I try to calm my racing thoughts. "Luis must have taken weeks to figure out who was behind his brother's death."

"Mmm," Runes nods grimly, "No doubt. The question is, what the fuck are we going to do about it now?"

"We'll have to discuss it inkirkja," I reply, dreading the tense meeting that's awaiting us. "Sending Skip's head here was a message. We both know it."

Runes nods, expression growing serious. "Yes, we do. For starters, go fetch Vanir. I need to speak with him."

I nod and rise from my chair, leaving Runes' office to track down our resident hacker, Vanir.

The only way we're going to get ahead of this is if we get information on Luis. The only person in the club who can find shit out and find it out quickly is the very one I'm searching for.

I make my way through the dimly lit main area of the club and don't see Vanir anywhere.

I continue on, searching through the bustling kitchen and still can't find him. A couple of the ol' ladies are in here shooting the shit, enjoying their day.

Heading outside, I figure he might be sneaking in a smoke break. Vail rips him a new asshole whenever he smokes, so he quit a while back. On occasion he will sneak one in.

He's not outside so I end up back inside the clubhouse.

My eyes scan the room until they land on Magnus, lounging on the couch with his phone in hand.
