Lifting my chin, I speak up. "You see Vanir?"

Magnus looks right at me. "He's been at the fire department volunteering today. I'd bet he'll be back soon."

Well, Runes isn't going to be happy.

I turn and prepare to go to his office to let him know Vanir isn't here when the clubhouse door creaks open and I turn.

Speaking of the damn devil, Vanir walks right in.

I lift my brows and speak with authority, "Follow me. Runes needs to see you."

Vanir sighs, "Fuck, did I do somethin'?"

I shake my head, a small laugh escaping my lips. "No, now come on." I urge him with a wave of my hand.

He follows behind me as we make our way to Runes' office.

As we enter and close the door behind us, Runes takes one look at Vanir and raises his brows in surprise, "You look like you've been through hell."

Vanir lets out a heavy sigh. "It was a long shift. What's up?"

Runes leans back in his chair and starts telling Vanir everything we just discussed. "Roque has a half-brother named Luis, who's now the leader of the cartel. I need you digging into him. I want to know everything we can about him, no matter how minuscule it may seem."

Vanir seems surprised at this news. "Didn't Roque grow up as an only child?"

I interject, "He did, which is why we were caught off guard when we heard he has a half-brother."

Vanir nods, determination set in his tone. "I'll look into things. Don't worry. How are we handlin' this? Are we going back to Cuba, or are they comin' to us?"

I look directly at Runes, curious of the answer.

Runes takes in a slow, deep breath and releases it before talking. "One thing I'm not willing to do is leave our women or kids vulnerable. I don't know this Luis fella, but one thing Ido know is that he means business. The delivery we received is proof of it."

I add in, "I doubt Luis is the kind of man who plays fair."

Runes gaze meets my own, a mutual understanding passing between us. "Exactly. I don't expect him to have any code of honor. We'd never stoop so low to go after their women or kids, but it doesn't mean he won't come after ours."

The mere thought of someone trying to hurt Starla sends a surge of rage through my body. I have this undeniable need to protect her from any enemy, even if it's the monsters in her mind.

As we all leave Runes' office, he strides confidently toward the garage. I can't help but be curious where he's running of to. "Heading any place special?"

He releases a deep rumble of laughter, "Only to my wife's event. Calming Spaces is hosting that mixer tonight. It's been going on all day and I promised her I'd stop by this evening."

With that, he heads into the garage and the door closes behind him.

I contemplate staying here and having a few beers, giving myself some much needed me time.

Someone clearing their throat causes me to glance over. It's Rayna, sitting on Magnus' lap.

She quirks an eyebrow at me mischievously. "Starla's bartending for them, in case you were interested."

Rayna and I have always had playful banter. She's a funny chick and one of Starla's good friends.

I cock a brow, "Why do you think I'd be interested?"

Rayna licks her lips and giggles. "Oh come on, Ivar, why are you asking stupid questions? Just go already. We both know you want to."

I lock my gaze with Rayna's, "It's not like I needed permission anyway."
