I reach the door and slip past Tor, stepping outside of the club with the officer.

Tor doesn't leave my side, standing in the doorway as I wait for whatever news this officer is about to bestow upon me.

"Hi," I manage to say nervously as I face the officer. "Um, you wanted to see me?"

He nods, his expression shifting into solemn grim. "Starla Jacobs?"

"Yes, that's me."

"I apologize, I have to state your full name and verify you're the person I've come to speak to first." He states, his tone growing increasingly more serious.

"It's okay, I understand." I reply calmly. "So, um, what's going on?"

He presses his lips into a stoic line before responding with a heavy heart. "I received a call from a Sheriff's office in Texas. They stated that a Melanie Jacobs was in a bad accident, and things aren't looking good. I'm not supposed to give you too many details, but I'd stress for you to go see her before it's too late."

My mother.

The same woman I haven't seen since the day I left.

The one who didn't believe me when I told her what my stepfather was doing to me.

Now, there's an officer standing in front of me, urging me to go visit a woman who wouldn't help her daughter.

I haven't seen my mother since I left . . . and yet there's an officer standing in front of me, telling me that I should go visit her.

A woman who turned a blind eye, who accused me of lying to her, who ultimately chose him instead of me.

Hatred and resentment flood my mind as I think about what my life could have been like if she just took my side.

I push those emotions aside and focus on the present, looking into the officer's eyes. "Thank you for coming to tell me."

"Of course." he replies with genuine empathy. "Here's the number of the hospital in case you have any questions." He hands me a small business card with a Texas number written on it before walking away.

I hold the business card in my now trembling hand, shock coursing through my body.

My emotions are a jumbled mess as I try to process this news.

What the fuck am I supposed to do?

"You okay?" Tor's calm voice brings me out of my head.

I blink a couple of times and look at him. The kid doesn't know much about my story, just that Ivar picked me up on the interstate.

I swallow hard and struggle to find the words. I start to open my mouth, but I can't say anything.

I'm struggling to grapple with the bomb that was just thrown on me.

Ivar emerges from the clubhouse, his concerned gaze fixated on me. "Star, what's wrong?"

Still, I can't say anything. I can't verbalize my overwhelming emotions.

Ivar turns to Tor and asks, "What happened?"

Tor hesitates before spilling the beans. "A police officer just showed up, said her mother was in a bad accident, and gave her a card with the hospital's number."

Ivar speaks calmly and is polite, "Thanks, brother, now get lost."

Tor sinks back into the clubhouse and Ivar grabs the knob, shutting the door as he walks outside.
