The entire group nods. We all know Skip. We know him very well. He’s the captain who took us to Cuba when we were going after Roque.

Magnus glances over at Runes with a tense expression.

Runes clears his throat and speaks to the group of us, “Someone has beheaded him and sent his head here, which only means one thing: someone has taken charge of the Culebra cartel.”

Kraken’s voice rings out sharply among the group, “Who? Roque didn’t have any family, and no one was in line to take the cartel over.”

The tension in the room is thick as everyone realizes we’re not done fighting the Culebra cartel. We all thought we could breathe easy for a while, but sadly, that’s not the case.

Fenrir slams his fist on the wooden table. “The cartel fell, but it only fell for a day. Someone saw this as their opportunity and took over the very thing we were trying to eradicate. And now these fuckers are using us as a warning to others.”

Vanir cocks a brow. “A warning? What do you mean?”

Runes interjects, his voice thick with frustration. “They’re using us to show others anyone who comes against the cartel will suffer the consequences. This is a warning, one that proves they’re coming for us.”

Logi releases a frustrated groan. “So much for a relaxing few months. Do we know if the cartel in general was associated with the child trafficking, or was it solely Roque?”

The room falls silent, and I scan my eyes from person to person, wondering if anyone will speak up. All I see are blank expressions. Fuck, no one has a clue.

I shake my head, frustrated that no one seems to know. How could we have missed this? Why weren’t we keeping tabs on the cartel?

Runes finally breaks the silence, “As of right now, we have no idea. We believed it was just Roque, but now I wonder if we were wrong.”

Rati’s piercing gaze looks around the table. “So, what’s the plan? How are we going to deal with this?”

Runes shifts in his chair and swallows hard. “I’ve been thinking about that since Magnus showed me the box. We have a few options. We obviously need to find out who the new leader of the Culebra cartel is, and I have some ideas on how to do it quietly.”

Everyone stares at our president with blank stares on their faces, waiting for him to explain his plan.

I’m the one to ask the million-dollar question. “What do you have in mind?”

Runes licks his lips and starts explaining, “The Irish have deep ties to the Mexican Cartel. Sofia Mackenzie is Greer and Sloane’s mother, and her maiden name was Ramirez. She’s the sister of Alejandro Ramirez, who is the head of the cartel in Mexico at this time.”

Logi interrupts, confusion evident on his face. “But we don’t have any ties to the Irish.”

I know the lineage and affiliations for a lot of our allies, so I explain how this could work. “We might not have direct ties with the Irish, but our allies do. The Steele family are cousins of theMackenzies, and we have a connection with them. We also know the Iron Vex MC works for the Irish, so they could be of some assistance as well.”

Runes nods in agreement. “What Ivar is saying is along the right lines. I’m going to forgo bringing the Steeles into this and go through the Iron Vex MC. I need to speak to Boss anyway. It’s been far too long, and it would be nice to get a reminder that our alliance is still in place. The last thing I want to do is tip off the Culebra cartel that we’re looking into them.”

Everything he’s saying makes sense. We need to make sure our next steps are well thought out and smart. We obviously didn’t think hard enough when it came to killing Roque.

We should have looked into the cartel even deeper and tried to see if we could anticipate something like this happening.

Runes continues, “I’m going to make some calls and see what I can find out. In the meantime, be extremely aware. We don’t know if they’ve been watching us or what their plan is.”

Runes slams the gavel down on the table, signaling we’re free to leavekirkja.

I’m one of the first to leave, curious to know if Starla’s mood has changed since I went inside.

I round the corner, and sure as shit, Starla is snapping at Regnor yet again.

She has her hands balled into fists at her sides. “I already told you I don’t need any fucking help! Would you just leave me alone? Fuck! How hard is it for you to listen? Can you even listen? Is that why you’re still a prospect, huh?”

A malicious smirk pulls at Regnor’s lips. “Better to be a prospect than a uselesshóra, don’t you think? At least I’ll level up in the club, but you’ll still be at the bottom of the totem pole.”

Starla loses the last bit of control she has left. Her eyes blaze with pure rage as she lunges at Regnor. I sprint toward them asfast as I can, positioning myself between the two of them before she has the chance to touch him.

My nostrils flare as I glare at Regnor, my voice dripping with pure fury. “Get the fuck out of here.”
