I told him to take it easy on her, and instead, he snaps like a fucking twig at the first chance.

Instead of backing down, Regnor shakes his head and sneers at me. “What’s so fuckin’ special about her? She’s nothing worth protecting. She’s a fuckin’ slut.”

I close the distance between us and get right up in his face, screaming at him. “You really want to pick a fight with an officer of the club? Huh? I told you to get the fuck out of here, so scram!”

I’m trying so hard not to do anything stupid right now, clenching my fists at my sides. I’m itching for the chance to get some retaliation, but I know I need to act maturely. I can’t go around throwing my fists whenever some disrespectful punk pisses me off.

Regnor obnoxiously cackles at me as he turns and starts to walk away, and that’s it. I have no sense of self-control left within me.

Adrenaline courses through my veins, and I call out his name, “Regnor.”

He turns with an infuriating smirk on his face. Without even giving it a second thought, I draw my fist back and deliver a fierce blow to his jaw.

The satisfying sound of my fist colliding into his face causes pride to storm through me. I stand tall, a victorious smirk tugging at my lips.

Magnus strides over with furrowed brows. His authoritative voice cuts through the tense air like butter, “Regnor, get the fuck out of here.”

Runes clears his throat and comes over to where we are, eyes glued to Regnor. “Actually,” he starts with a sinister smile, “I think you should go scrub all the toilets in the club tonight with your bare hands. I want them spotless.”

Regnor grumbles something unintelligible under his breath.

Runes speaks up again, the authority unwavering. “Actually, scrub the toilets, and then go dig that ditch for the pipe outside.”

Regnor’s face turns bright red. I imagine his blood is boiling right now, which pleases me to no end.

Runes just told us a couple of days ago that he obtained permits for Bubba’s. One of them has a stipulation that the water pipe coming into that side of the clubhouse needs to be exposed to the inspectors.

Regnor almost can’t believe what he’s hearing. “You can’t be fuckin’ serious.”

Runes gives a condescending shake of his head. “You do dumb shit, you win dumb prizes.”

Regnor stalks off, getting as far away from the group of us as he can.

I lick my lips and look over at Starla, who’s as white as a ghost. No one will ever understand the protective nature I have for her.

They weren’t the ones who picked her up that night. They didn’t see the fear and pain in her eyes. They don’t know how carefully I chose my words, so she’d get on the back of my bike.

From the first moment I met her, I was invested in her.

Runes sucks in a deep breath and shakes his head. “Starla, I’m sorry he’s an idiot. Are you okay?”

Starla looks right into Runes’ eyes. “I’ve dealt with much worse people than Regnor, believe that.” The others might not know it, but there’s a tinge of pain in her tone.

Runes offers a soft smile. “I’m sure you have.”

Runes walks off, motioning with his head for Magnus to follow him, and soon, it’s just the two of us at the bar.

I allow a few moments of silence to pass by us and then speak up, “I’m worried about you.”

Starla’s pain-filled hazel eyes bore into mine. “You have nothing to worry about.”

Bullshit.

Ever since she killed LeAnn, something’s snapped inside her, and that worries me. I’ve never seen this side of Starla, and if she doesn’t talk to me, I can’t help her keep the darkness at bay.

I feel like the guilt of killing LeAnn is consuming her, and I want to help. The problem is, I can only help her if she lets me.
