“Don’t start crying again, Katya. Please don’t. It’s crazy complicated, but it will get better.” Anna hugs me first, then the other two girls throw their arms around me right after.

“How about we do some girly things and eat some food? I’m sure you’re starving by now.”

“I am kind of hungry.”

“Good. I’ll tell my brother.”

“While we wait, let’s get these clothes put away. I can’t stand to see a good fabric wrinkled,” Mariska bemoans. I giggle and feel a little less miserable.

Ten minutes later an entire tray of food is brought up. It’s large enough to serve a dozen people, and when I tell Angelina that she just smiles and says, “It’s good to see you eat.”

I take a fresh strawberry and dip it in some crème. “So what do you girls do for fun? You’re the first women I’ve actually met that weren’t mean to me.”

“Well, we need to teach you how to fight for one. Although, I doubt Roman would like you getting your pretty face scuffed up.”

“We’re sisters so we spend a lot of time watching movies, going to the malls, gossiping.”

“Your mom is staying here as well?” I don’t know what it’s like to have a proper family, sisters or a mother. It must be wonderful even when they’re bickering and slapping each other for something.

“Yes, but she’s napping right now. She has a nasty cold, so she’s been eating a special broth that Maria made her.” I pluck at a few grapes and eat them.

“You’re eating only the fruit. You’re missing all the good stuff.” Anya passes me a crème filled dessert, and it looks incredible. The second it hits my tongue I know I’m going to put on twenty pounds hanging out with the girls. A moan escapes my lips and I take a second bite right away.

“See, living here is not so bad,” Anna says. My mind goes straight to Roman and how he must hate me. None of these excesses could make up for the loss of his affection. Was it all an act or, like the girls say, he truly wants me? I know he lusts after me because even when he was angry, he gave me an intense orgasm and wanted to marry me, but is his hatred for my birth father greater than his interest in me?

“Uh oh. You sent her off the deep end again.”

“Sorry.” Anya squeezes me.

“I need to be alone,” I whisper.

“Call us when you want to hang out.” I nod and sit in bed, thinking about Roman for the thousandth time today.

Chapter Eight

Roman

I’ve had all I can take of staying away from Katya. It’s been almost a full twenty-four hours since I’ve spoken to her and the last words that we shared weren’t kind ones. Two steps at a time, I fly up the stairs to my bedroom. I reach for the knob just as Ivan’s sisters open it. Seeing them, I step back and let them exit and close the door. “What’s going on?” I asked in a hushed voice.

The dark-haired one says, “We just wanted to comfort her.”

“Did it work?” I want to know how bad it is before going in and that probably makes me a coward, but I’ve never been in this position before.

One of the blondes answers, “We don’t know. We thought so, but she has a lot going on in that head of hers.”

I nod and enter the room, locking it behind me.

When I turn to look at her, her head is ducked down, shoulders slumped, sitting in the middle of our bed. The sadness drives me into action.

“Aurora, look at me,” I command.

She raises her head, and there’s an air of attitude mixed in with those sad blue eyes. “Have you forgotten my name already?”

Shaking my head, I rush closer to the bed. “No, but you answered.”

“I’m sorry, Roman.” I’m taken aback by her apology and freeze on the spot. “I’m really sorry.” She pouts, and it’s the fucking cutest thing, but I’m not sure if I’m being played or she’s actually serious. I kick off my shoes and climb on the bed.

Cupping her chin, I stare into her eyes. “I already told you… you’re not leaving, so you don’t need to coax your way out of getting away from me because it’s not happening.”
