I spend the morning dancing around as I shower and prepare for the day. Tonight, I’m going to make Roman my soup to thank him for being so sweet. Maria and Angelina have been smiling at me because they think I’ve lost it. “You are so happy, and we absolutely love it. Soon this house will be filled with laughter and babies.”

It reminds me that maybe his family had lived here before. “Did his family live here before they died?” Other than a picture or two, I didn’t see anything that looked like anyone else lived here. Even though I know they were killed, I don’t know the details, and I don’t want to, either.

Maria shakes her head. “No, this is Roman’s home. They had their home not too far away.”

“Wow, it smells good in here,” Alek says, coming into the kitchen and rubbing his stomach. Roman follows, growling at him.

I smile at Alek, earning me a growl from Roman. “Thank you. I’m cooking, and the soup should be done in about an hour.”

“Alek, stop it, or I’m not cooking for you anymore.”

“Maria, don’t be getting jealous now. Roman’s not going to let her cook for me all the time. You’ll always be my girl.” He winks at her.

“Anyone that cooks for you makes you a happy man,” she says, swatting his hand as he reaches for the fresh bread she’s slicing.

“She’s not wrong,” Roman says, sliding around the counter to pull me in his arms. “I hope you’re not overdoing it in here.”

“I’m not. I love cooking, and it’s nice to use new and pretty toys to do it.”

“Anything you want, just tell me.” He kisses my neck and then pulls away to snatch a slice of bread.

“Slick,” Alek mutters.

“Nice moves, Mr. Semyonov.”

“I got more moves for you.” He puts the slice of bread to my lips, and I bite. An involuntary moan escapes. “Fuck, woman. None of that in public.”

“Now, I’m really getting jealous. That must be some damn excellent bread.”

“Oh, shut up and have one,” Maria says, stuffing one in his hand. He smiles cheekily, and then their phones go off simultaneously.

Roman and Alek start speaking fast in Russian, and then Maria takes my hand, tugging me from the room. “Roman,” I call out.

He rushes to my side and kisses me hard before pulling away. “I love you,” he says as he leaves me with Maria.

We hurry to the middle of the living room where the girls and their mother meet us, Angelina and Ivan following behind. He hits a switch and code, and the floor opens. “Inside now,” Ivan barks. Maria goes in first down the stairs with me just right behind her. All the women enter, and then Ivan closes the door, trapping us inside.

“Oh my God. What’s going on? Where are we?”

“We're in the safe room of the house. We’ll be protected here from all danger, including full-on bomb blasts, so try to calm down.” Oh yeah, that’s just going to calm me right down. A bomb blast while Roman’s out there and could be killed.

I throw my hands up in the air, ready to rip my hair out. “Calm down? Roman’s out there.”

“We know. Your father’s here.”

I slam my hands down on the desk near the entrance. “Can we stop calling him that now? He’s never been a father to me.”

“Of course. Volchek has arrived with a fleet of men ready for battle.”

This day went from wonderful to the worst day of my life in a heartbeat. One moment I’m rolling around in Roman’s arms, and the next, we’re in panic mode. I’ve been sent off to a room in the house away from him, hiding with the rest of the women. I look at all the control panels as they light up with the cameras from outside. We can see the action from where we are.

Ivan’s mother and sisters decide to stay clear of that area, but I can’t look away.

I start pacing back and forth. After a minute of losing my mind, I need to get out of here and find Roman. Searching for the open sesame button on the door, Mariska grabs my arm and stops me. “Don’t even think about going out there, Katya. Roman would lose his mind. He has to protect you; he can’t do that if you go out there and distract him.” She’s right, and yet it doesn’t make it any better.

“Did you see that big guy that came with my father?”

“Yes, that’s Drago Romanov. Don’t worry about him. He’s not on your father’s side,” Maria says, patting my hands. I cling to her and turn away from the cameras because that man screams dangerous, and if he betrays Roman, I can’t watch it and be able to do nothing.
