Chapter Ten

Roman

The thing about rats is that they’re willing to sneak in and attack any way they can. Sergei reported that Vlad and a handful of men arrived at the airport over an hour ago. Drago and his main guy were with him, which I already knew since I’d been in communication with my friend since I learned about Vlad’s plan.

With my last contact, Drago informed me that they’d separate themselves from Vlad’s men the second they arrived at my estate and to be prepared.

I came in to check on my princess in the kitchen and see her before I had to send her away. I knew any minute the alarm would sound, but I selfishly stole a few more moments with her, needing to breathe her in and feel her as if it would be my last time.

The first alarm sounds in the distance. They’re five miles out, so I send the women to the panic room where they’ll be safe. My priority is protecting Katya while getting the evil out of our lives.I hadn’t meant to say those words so carelessly when she deserved to hear them said properly, but I meant them with all of my heart.

Men prepare their weapons as the seven carloads of men appear out of the line of trees. Drago sent me a message that they were coming with about forty men from Vlad’s allies he corralled at the airport. I’m sure with all the same promise of Katya and his empire, which I have decimated. That’s a lot more than I expected, but my thirty men can handle them.

The first vehicle rams my iron gate, but I already removed the hinges, so it easily falls. Vladimir’s face is shocked and then he gives the order. His men still come blazing through my driveway, shooting with pretty heavy firepower.

Drago and his man pop out of the third vehicle and roll to the side, ducking past the fountain and moving behind a large tree. Before his men can see it coming, Drago opens fire on the last vehicle sending it careening into a tree on the lawn. His buddy tosses a quick explosive at the car in front of it, sending that car up in flames. Several bodies fall out of the burning car, trying to shoot as they burn.

“Traitor,” Vlad calls out from his position, tucked safely in his armored vehicle like a coward. His men now split the gunfire between the two areas, giving us a reprieve. My eyes are solely focused on Vladimir, who is in the second car, hiding while everyone else does the work for him. Three guys come barreling forward with rapid-firing machine guns. From the roof, Ivan sends out a grenade, landing on the fuckers and sending them all over the lawn.

The first vehicle plows through the dead bodies, charging my men, who continue firing. We set out two dozen spike strips in the driveway and grass. We watched as all the vehicles began popping tires and coming to a full stop, forcing them to jump out only to meet my guys hanging out in a tree. Two of the vehicles slammed into each other with momentum, creating a wall of SUVs. Still, my men get to work.

Bodies litter the ground as Drago and his man maneuver around them, running alongside Alek and me. “I want Volchek,” I shout for all to hear. “No one but me kills him.” I want Volchek to hear that shit as well. The need to destroy him has only grown.

“Yes, Boss,” Alek says.

Drago nods and gives me a warning. “Careful. He’s a trapped animal.”

I nod.

“Anyone who kills this bastard gets to enjoy my daughter’s pussy,” Volchek sounds off from a megaphone in his vehicle. That’s it. I lose all cool.

“I’m going to kill that son of a bitch,” I roar. “It ends today.”

“Fuck,” I hear Drago snarl, but that’s all I hear because my ears are ringing with rage.

I run toward the SUV with Vladimir Volchek hiding like the bitch he is. As I move closer, two more guys come running my way, and Drago and Alek take them out.

Six or more come from the next vehicle, and they start spraying, shooting at any target in their path, but I’m so focused on getting to Vlad that I don’t see if my men have gotten them all. I’m almost to Vlad when I feel the burn of a bullet to my chest. Then out of nowhere I’m hit with something heavy.

“You idiot,” Drago snarls.

“Roman,” I hear Katya’s voice in my head as I fall to the ground; everything goes cold and dark. I failed.

****

“Roman, please open your eyes.” The sound of an angel stirs me. I wake up in my bed with Katya fawning all over me.I must have woken up in heaven.“You’re alive,” she says, sobbing beside me.Her pale blonde hair falls around her face, creating a halo and her icy blues are bright.

What the hell happened? I think, trying to look around the room. The sun is lightly peeking through the curtains, but my eyes are still a little unfocused.

“I am?” I ask, groaning in pain.

“Yes, but it was pretty close,” Katya says, pressing kisses on my face. I bring her close, kissing her hard until I feel her yelp. Quickly, I release her and allow my eyes to adjust to the light.

“I’m sorry.” She rubs her cheek. I see the red mark on her face, so I rub my face and feel the day-old scruff.

“Next time, cool your heels,” Drago calls from the doorway without a shirt on and his waist bandaged.I want to snap about not wearing clothes in front of my woman, but I’m guessing he’s the reason I’m still kicking, and I owe him a lot. His man hands him a dress shirt that he gingerly puts on.

“Did you get him?” I ask.
