“I need to get off the phone, Taylor, we’ve been talking too long. Promise me you’ll be careful.” I nod. “Eyes open.”

“Always,” I state with a huge smile, as warm tears silently streak down my face.

Chapter

Sixteen

Taylor

I decided the night before I was going to stay home for a couple days. I came to this decision while Eden and Pierce slept on Eden’s bed as Joss snuggled in behind me in my bed. Chance made himself a slightly padded tiny bed on the floor using multiple blankets.

As I watch everybody frantically get ready and asking me the same thing. “Are you sure you don’t want me to stay?” I decided just to fucking go to school.

I’m a damn Quinn, well a Capponi, now. I’m not hiding in my room. I have great friends and a bunch of damn guards, nothing’s going to happen. I know my father wanted me to stay on campus, hopefully not just locked in this room. I don’t plan on going anywhere except for school.

I’m going to have to deal with all of my peers sooner or later, might as well just get it over with.

I get ready, conspicuously, as the gays and Joss run back and forth to their rooms. We have to skip breakfast today, the morning classes that we have start in thirty minutes.

“What are you doing?” Eden asks spotting me in a University T-shirt, jeans and my Birkenstocks with socks.

“I want to get this agonizing part over with, sitting in the room all day gives me too much to think about.” Eden nods as she grabs our bags from the closet.

The guards weren’t happy with my decision and they made it known, especially Ace when he snapped out. “No!” But I guess it’s not up to them, they’re here to protect me.

The two morning classes go by extremely awkwardly. The charity case girl normally doesn’t have other people follow her into the room, definitely not this number of men protecting me.

My first class only had a few other guards waiting in the hall, as I left my five guards with them. These men are not lightweights, they are built, big, scary looking mother fuckers.

I know that it’s got around and everybody would’ve had to have heard who I am. But still, the shocked looks and gazes at the men and me show people a different light. Which I hope is one of strength and nothing more. With as much as I’ve learned about my father in the last day, I seriously doubt I’m gonna have that many enemies, except for those that want him dead, or guys that hold a grudge against him. Nobody wants to fuck with ‘The Ghost.’

During my second class I can’t stop counting down the time before lunch, missing breakfast, especially being slightly hung over, is not the best idea. It never is.

After the awkward initial stares and some loosely worded comments, everyone seems to get back to normal. Luckily it’s happened in both classes so far, but I should know better.

I’ve been in the same class with Gavin Walker for almost a month, and he hasn’t said one word to me. He’s a bestie of Cal Santorin, which makes a lot of sense, but for some reason this fucking dick decides to come and pay me a visit when there’s only fifteen minutes left.

“The Santorins are finally going to destroy your bitch ass father.” He leans in closer to me, making me lean partly back. “You better watch your back, bitch.”

I don’t say anything as he pops back up then turns around. He shrieks like a girl when he sees one of the biggest guards that Ace has standing right behind him. Part of his face bounced off the dude’s rock hard chest. The class breaks out in booming laughter as I smirk, realizing the bitch deserved it. I give a nod to the guard that was just waiting for him to touch me. Wanting to teach him a lesson. If he did touch me, the man would’ve snapped all of his fingers.

The class I’m in, my second of the day, before my favorite, lunch, is finance. This is open to all grades but is required for the majority of degrees. This is the first time I’m taking it. I’ve had to catch up on several classes to make sure I was up to academic standards. I didn’t receive any of these at the state and community colleges.

“What do you know aboutThe Council?” A couple of younger girls, maybe sophomores, ask me from the row in front.

Normally I would ignore people that are just trying to gossip and learn information, but honestly I have no clue what the freaking Council is.

I lean forward. “I have no freaking clue.” They seem nice enough. They’re not trying to start shit, just curious.

Both girls lean back, allowing the most eager one to tell me what she knows. “From what my dad told me, he said it was a twelve member organization that was started centuries ago.” She gives me a tight smile, realizing she doesn’t like the attention. “It was started to make sure that mafia and other government agencies, people in positions of power, are true. This organization is to protect the innocent.”

“Thank you,” I state as the teacher starts talking again. Wanting all of our attention, at least I have some kind ofinformation. It was not what I expected. I thought it was a different group of mafia people that did what they wanted to. I guess in a way it is.

I know there’s so much more to learn, but I won’t be able to find out until I reunite with my parents.

Eden is waiting for me in the hall, as I exit. Thankfully the guards backed off, giving us more space for my social life. There’s always a few in the front, a few men behind, and several of them are always flanking me, even if it’s from a few feet away, where I can breathe.

We join the others and sit down for lunch. “Thank you so much,” I say to nobody in particular as I notice that they’ve already ordered for me. I received what poor people would refer to as a cheeseburger basket, but it has some fancy name here. They also got me a chicken salad and a large Coke, plus a bottle of water. Eden opted today for a whole pizza to herself.
