“They are waiting for one of us to surface with a tail…so they can take it?”

“They believe they’ll be able to use science to create a serum using our scales to reverse the infertility plaguing the world right now,” Narissa explains.

“But it’s something magical that caused the infertility, not scientific.”

“What do you mean?” Narissa asks and with that, I launch into the story of what I know about the vengeful goddess. Even as I say the words, it sounds fantastical to my own ears.

“Wait.” Kristle holds up her hand. “You’re telling me that the gods and goddesses are real, like ‘walk the earth’ real?”

I nod. “Yes.” Her mouth drops open in shock, obviously not expecting that answer.

Pearl

“Idon’t know why you’re surprised.” Narissa’s voice is calm, as if her eyes didn’t bulge at my words only moments ago. “We suspected there was something magical behind recent events.”

“Suspecting something magical is one thing. Knowing that the gods and goddesses walk the earth is something else entirely,” Kristle snarks back.

I smile.

“Then I guess I shouldn’t tell you that one of my friends living on the island I was telling you about is the granddaughter of one of those goddesses.”

This time, Narissa is unable to contain her shock and, dare I say, excitement.

“Which one?”

“Artemis.”

“She’s supposed to be a virgin goddess,” Kristle says. “How can she be a grandmother?”

“I asked the same thing, and she told me not to believe everything I heard. She asked if I would be able to abstain from sex for a millennium.”

“Well, when you put it that way…” Narissa smirks while Kristle looks over at her mother, horrified.

“So, this friend you want to call…”

“Matt,” I supply.

“Can he be trusted?” Narissa asks, searching my eyes for answers. “I hope you understand my reluctance. I want to believe everything that you’re saying, but I need to think about the safety of my pod first.”

I nod. “As you should. I assure you no one on our island means you or your pod any harm.”

Kristle and her mother share a long look, communicating with each other seemingly without words. After a few tense moments, Narissa hands me an older smartphone.

“I’m putting my trust in you. Break that trust, and I break you.” Her voice is as dark as the threat, but I am not scared. I have no intention of betraying her or the other women I’ve met here.

“Thank you,” I say solemnly, taking the phone and dialing the only phone number I have memorized.

“Hello?”

“Bree.”

“Pearl?” Her beautiful voice rises an octave in excitement. “Where are you?”

“Somewhere in Australia, I think.” I look at the women sitting across from me to verify.

“Melbourne,” Kristle supplies quietly.
