“Melbourne?” Breanne says, and I can envision her little nose wrinkling in confusion. “You were supposed to come home two weeks ago. We were ready to come find you when Mizu arrived to tell us that you were tracking more of your kind. Is that why you’re calling? Did you find more?”
“Bree,” I interrupt her before she can continue. “Yes, I did find more sea nymphs, and that’s why I’m calling. I need to talk to Matt actually.” I grimace, knowing what’s coming next.
“I see how it is. You’re just using me for my mate.”
“You’ve been spending far too much time with Skarlyt and Rayne, I think,” I chide her newfound jealousy.
“At least they spend time with me.” She tosses back the response, and I sigh.
“You’re right. When I get home, I promise that you and I will have a full day—twenty-four hours—of girl time.”
“Forty-eight or no deal,” she counters automatically.
I let out a little chuckle and readily agree.
“Deal.”
“Matt,” she calls out her mate’s name behind her. “It’s Pearl.” There’s rustling as they pass the phone between them.
“Pearl? Everything okay?”
“Besides your mate somehow being jealous of both of us?“
“Hey!” Breanne exclaims in the background, causing Matt to chuckle.
“Listen, I found more sea nymphs. I want to bring them home with me, but I need to prove to them that the island is what I’ve said it is. They’ve been through a lot lately.”
“Haven’t we all?” He sighs. “Okay, turn it on video chat.”
I pull the phone away from my face and only see a black screen. I’m not out of water enough to have learned the ins and outs of modern technology. I hear a sigh on the other end of the phone.
“Press the button on the side of the phone. It will make the screen come up, then press the button that looks like a speaker.”
I follow his instructions and instantly hear the difference.
“Okay. Now what?” I ask.
“Is there a button that looks something like a video camera?”
I search the screen of the phone. “No?”
“Okay, give me a second.” I hear him walk over to his computer, his fingers flying over the keys. “Who’s there with you?”
“Narissa, the pod mother, and her daughter,” I supply.
“Nice to meet you both. What I’m about to do is going to seem invasive, but I promise that you have nothing to fear from me,” he says, and the two women share a look of concern. A few clicks of his fingers later, the TV settled in the corner of the room turns on and his face pops up.
“How did he do that?” Kristle asks, more curious than concerned.
“Let’s just say I’m good with technology,” Matt responds. His blonde hair is styled messily as usual, and his bright blue eyes are sparkling. “Nice to meet you both.”
“We’re here too!” Bree’s face peeks out from behind him, holding a smiling Erik.
“Look at you, little man! You’ve gotten so big!” I coo at him, leaning closer to the screen.
“Say hi to Aunty Pearl,” Bree says, grabbing Erik’s pudgy hand and making him wave. “Tell her you wouldn’t look so much bigger if she visited more often.”
“Where are my girls?” I ask, not realizing how much I missed them until now.
