“Has it been so long that you’ve forgotten? Have you forgotten how she got her hooks into him in the first place? How she murdered your father?”

“Of course not.”

“Maybe you’re blind to the fact that my cherry blossom was only skin and bones when she arrived. Maybe you did not see that Loukas has new scars on his body that weren’t there before. Scars that a shifter shouldn’t have.”

“There is nothing we can do,” the original voice says, this time sounding sad and resigned.

I lift myself, peeking through the window. The second I see the large family portrait hanging on the wall, I know I’m at the right place. His gorgeous face is smiling, looking over at three women who I assume are his mother and sisters.

“We have to try. She’s going to kill him if Amelia shifts.”

“Why would she kill him if she shifts?”

“Because she won’t suffer herself to have a shifter for a daughter, and he will put himself between that monster and my cherry blossom. She will kill him.”

My blood runs cold at the woman’s, who I now assume is his mother, words. If Loukas is who I think he is to me and what she is saying is true, he’s in danger. A lot of danger.

“Maybe we can get there in time, sneak into Northern Ontario, and smuggle Amelia out before she shifts.” The second voice does not even try to sound hopeful at this suggestion. “The Daughters of Eris would never need to know.”

“You know there’s no way for us to do that,” his mother chides, and I get an idea.

They may not be able to smuggle anyone out of anywhere, but I can. I quickly snag the pink shorts from the line and make my way back to the beach.

I send a text with a low-resolution picture of where I am and immediately call Breanne.

“Thank the gods you’re okay.”

“I need you to send someone to get me.”

“Why? What’s happened?” she asks, though I can hear that she’s put me on speakerphone.

“Nothing with the sea nymphs. But…” I pause, unsure of how to explain what’s going on. I look out at the ocean and feel conflicted once again. My heart is telling me that I need to focus on Loukas, but my head is telling me that the sea nymphs need to be my priority.

“But what?”

“How did it feel when you first saw Matt? Before you two spoke?” I ask.

“Like there was this little thread inside me that was constantly trying to pull us together. Why?”

“Because that’s how I feel…”

“You met your mate?” she asks excitedly.

“Maybe… But he’s in trouble.”

“What kind of trouble?”

“If what I just heard is true, the kind that you don’t come back from. The kind that I’m going to need Rayne’s help with…”

“And now you don’t know what to do because you don’t want to leave your pod behind,” she states. There is no question in there. She already knows how I’m feeling, and that’s why she’s my best friend.

“Yeah…”

“Okay. Sebastyn is on his way to get you. Come here, and we’ll figure it out.”

Sebastyn pops up before I can even respond.

“Beautiful beach you got here, Pearl. Are you sure you want to come home?” He chuckles, looking around. I hear Breanne cursing him out for even asking that question before I hang up the phone.
