“The Daughters of Eris and Sons of Ares are purists. They do not play well with other supernaturals. If they have this Loukas among them, they have him for a reason. We definitely need to get him and the kids they mentioned out of there.”

“Do you know where their coven is located?”

“I have an idea,” Skarlyt admits. “It’s a big area, but—lucky you—it’s surrounded by water.”

“Do you have another one of these phones?” I ask, turning to Matt.

“I do. Why?”

“Because I need to give this one to Narissa and send her to monitor what’s happening with the sea nymphs while I go to Northern Ontario.”

“Wait a minute,” Bree protests. “You can’t go alone.”

“I have to. I can get in through the water undetected and gather intel. Besides, that’s why I asked for the other phone—so that I can call in the cavalry if needed.”

“This one has a better camera,” Matt says, handing over a more modern-looking phone. “It doesn’t have as deep a range, but you’ll be in lakes more than the ocean. I think you’ll be fine.”

“Can you swim in freshwater?” Skarlyt asks.

“I can. If I’m injured, I won’t be able to heal as quickly as I can in salt water.”

“Take Rayne with you,” Breanne suggests.

“There is no way I will go undetected if I take her with me. And she can’t stay under the water like me.”

“Then take another mer—” Breanne begins, and I make a face, knowing she is about to call us mermaids. “Take another sea nymph with you.”

“I can’t. Their main focus needs to be rescuing Narissa’s pod. It’s where my focus should be too,” I admit.

Breanne comes and places her hand on my shoulder.

“Your focus needs to be on your mate. The rest of your pod will understand.”

I look up into her eyes and dip my chin in agreement, though I have a feeling they will not understand as well as she thinks they will. Bree doesn’t know sea nymphs like I do. The ones here on the island with me—my pod—have adapted to the way of life on the island, with the rest of our friends and family. The ones in Narissa’s pod haven’t had that opportunity yet.

“Can you take me to the pod?” I ask Skarlyt.

She nods, reaching out for me.

“We will organize two teams here,” Matt pipes in before we disappear. “We’ll be ready to help with both rescue missions.”

I give him a nod of thanks.

“Good luck,” Skarlyt whispers as she drops me in front of the home we gave Narissa to stay in.

I let out a heavy sigh, not wanting to have this conversation. After all the grief I gave her about choosing to let her pod members go missing for months, now I feel as if I’m doing something even worse…being selfish.

I knock on the door twice before it swings open, revealing Narissa. Her smile fades into a frown as soon as she sees me.

“What’s happened?”

“Everyone is okay, but I need to talk to you,” I tell her, and she steps back, allowing me to enter her home.

I take a seat at her dining room table and wait until she sits across from me.

“Pearl? You’re scaring me.”

“We found your pod, and they are safe.” I heave out another sigh. “I need you to take my place in rescuing Sky.”
