“I will go in and talk to them.”

“Alone?” Rayne clarifies, and I nod.

“If we all go in guns blazing, it will be taken as a threat.”

“What about the little one?” Sarah asks, and I look over to the sleeping child in Andres’ arms and shake my head.

“She will stay with Andres until I figure out if it’s safe or not.”

“Safe?” Skarlyt asks a little louder, causing Amelia to whimper and a deep rumble to come from Andres’ chest. “Sorry,” she whispers. “Aren’t they her family? Why wouldn’t she be safe?”

“They are, and I don’t know. It’s just a feeling that I should go in and talk to them alone.”

“I’ll come with you,” Rayne supplies, putting her hand on my shoulder in solidarity.

I turn to her. “No offense, Rayne. You know I love you, but you’re not the most subtle person in the world.”

She puts her hand on her chest as if I just wounded her greatly, and her mouth drops open in shock. I pin her with a ”are you for real” look before turning back to Skarlyt.

“The best course of action is for all of us to go to the beach in Greece, and you wait while I speak to them.”

“What if you need help?” Sarah asks, concern lining her features.

“I’ll get you a signal somehow,” I tell her, the words falling flat as they leave my mouth. Because if I’m being honest with myself, I have no idea how I would signal them if I needed help. Sure, I could scream and hope that Andres could hear me.

“How about Sarah and I bring Rayne to hide in the trees or something out of sight but able to see in case you need us?” Sebastyn supplies.

I turn, pointing a finger at Rayne. “The only way I’ll agree to that is if you promise not to interfere unless I truly need help.”

I wait with bated breath as she first mocks shock, then feigns innocence before finally agreeing with a nod.

“Okay then. That’s the plan. Drusilla, Skarlyt, and Andres will wait on the beach with Amelia. Sebastyn, Sarah, and Raynewill find some place high up to hide—don’t forget they’re owl shifters so you need to make sure you stay out of sight. While I go in and talk to my mate’s family.” I wait for everyone to nod before both Rayne and I step up to Skarlyt. Sebastyn steps next to Andres and Amelia, and Sarah grabs onto Drusilla.

In the blink of an eye, our group is standing on a familiar beach in Greece. The air is far warmer than the cabin we just left, but, instead of the late afternoon sun shining in the sky, it’s darkness with a sliver of a moon that greets us.

“Well, at least it will be easier for us to hide,” Seb says.

“And harder for us to see,” Sarah warns.

“Not for me.” Rayne winks at her.

“Then I guess it’s a good thing you talked them into letting you go with them, isn’t it?”

“Yup,” she responds, popping thepat the end.

“Okay, if you three want to hide off in the distance over there,” I say, more to Seb and Sarah than Rayne, and point to the west side, where I know the village is.

They nod. Seb stands with his back to Rayne and gestures for her to hop on like a piggyback ride.

“Seriously?” she asks, but I can see the excitement in her eyes at the prospect of flying.

“It’s the easiest way,” Seb responds, and Rayne wastes no time hopping up onto his back, the three of them rising into the sky—Seb and Rayne a little slower than Sarah—but still rising, nonetheless.

“You’ll keep her safe?” I ask Andres, Drusilla, and Skarlyt.

“With our lives,” Andres rumbles out.

With that, I turn and make my way along the path toward the village. The last two times I was careful to go unheard. This time I make sure my footsteps are loud enough to be heard by any sentries who may be standing guard.
