Loukas’ mother takes in the sight of her granddaughter nuzzling into the king of dragons with wide eyes and mouth gaping open. Andres must see this too, because he shifts back, scooping Amelia up into his arms.

“Once that was my title,” he rumbles. “But no more. The time of Kings and Queens is long over.”

“Yes, my k… I mean Andres,” Loukas’ mother says with a bow.

“But let me be clear. Anyone who wishes harm on this child will answer to me.” The growl in his voice is fierce and leaves no room for argument.

“And who are you?” Loukas’ mom asks as she steps closer to me.

“Pearl,” I respond. Amelia wiggles her way out of Andres’ arms to stand next to her Ya-Ya.

“She’s daddy’s mate.”

Now it's my turn to be shocked. I didn’t tell her that I was Loukas’ mate, I am sure he didn’t have time to.

“Is she, now?” Loukas’ mother asks, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. “I’m Rita. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She reaches out a hand for me to shake which I meet eagerly.

“And you.”

“Mother. This could be a trick,” Loukas’ sister says, stepping up and pulling her mother and niece back into the crowd. “Look how many people have descended upon us. How many more do you have hiding amongst the shadows?”

I raise my hands once more, hoping to appear non-threatening.

“It’s true that I do have four more allies waiting.”

“Bring them out.” The words are hardly out of her mouth before Seb and Sarah lower themselves to the ground, and Skarlyt pops in with Drusilla. Drusilla immediately links arms with Rayne and pulls her toward Andres.

“Witches?” The male voice asks this, and my brows furrow as I only now realize that it has been his mate who has done the majority of the talking. I thought he was supposed to be the alpha.

“I understand your aversion to witches. Believe me, I do,” I tell the crowd. “But these are not the same sort that you’re used to dealing with. The entire reason we came here was to warn you and offer you protection.”

“What kind of protection?” A voice calls out.

“We,” I gesture to our group, “Live on an island filled with supernatural creatures. All factions live in harmony and peace with one another, safe from the wrath of the vengeful goddess and the humans.”

“Impossible.”

“No where is safe.”

Skarlyt steps forward. “The island is safe for any and all who wish to have a safe haven. We have disagreements and we often find ourselves in danger when we try to help others, but we do not tolerate any violence on the island.”

“We also have a school there, where all types of supernaturals from age four to twenty-four attend to learn,” Sebastyn adds. Sarah is tucked into his side protectively as voices from the crowd begin to fill the air.

I can feel time slipping away from us, and I know we don’t have the luxury of enticing each person here with the promise of our island home.

“Listen, you can make whatever decision you want,” I interrupt whatever Sebastyn’s next advertisement is going to be. “At the end of the day, Loukas asked me to come here andwarn you. He wanted me to offer you a safe place to go now that Antonia is on the warpath looking for Amelia. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve done that. If you choose to stay here and wait for her, you can. I will be taking Amelia with me where she will be safe,” I say the last words with a look at Rita who nods.

“I will come.”

“Mother,” Loukas’ sister says, pleading with her mother.

“This is your brother’s mate. He’s asked her to protect us for a reason. I trust your brother. You should too.”

“I trust Loukas. Of course, I do. How do we know she’s really his mate?”

“I feel it in here,” Rita says, placing a hand over her heart.

One by one, most of the parliament agree. All but a few agree to come with us to our home. They take a little time to pack up only what they need, vowing to return once the threat is over.
