While the parliament is busy, Rita tracks me down.

“Where is Loukas?”

“Hopefully, he and Zach have escaped and are making their way to my allies.”

She searches my eyes, her eyes misting up with what I hope are tears of relief, and throws her arms around me.

“Thank the gods.”

Chapter Thirteen

Loukas

“Where is she?” Antonia screams as she slaps me hard enough across the face to wake me from my unconsciousness.

I open my eyes to find her standing in front of me, an evil snarl on her face.

“What?” I ask, shaking my head to clear the fog.

“You know damn well what. Where is she?”

“Who?” I ask, wincing at a harsh throb in my temple.

What’s the last thing I remember…

“Don’t play stupid with me. Where is Amelia?”

“Amelia?” I ask, panic beginning to grip my body as the events of the last few hours—or days—run through my mind.

Amelia shifted. Pearl came and took her somewhere safe. Pearl also gave me two necklaces. I reach my hand down to my pocket, feeling the outlines of the stones and relief courses through me. I don’t allow it to show, keeping the tension in my body.

“Yes. Our daughter, Amelia, who you corrupted.”

“Corrupted?”

She nods. “You obviously did something to make her a shifter instead of a witch.”

I scoff at her. “It doesn’t work that way, and you know it.”

“It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you tell me where she is.” She lashes out with her magic, entangling me like a viper, restricting my movements and slowly squeezing me.

“I don’t know,” I grind out through clenched teeth.

“I. Don’t. Believe. You,” she says, her magic squeezing my throat once more. This time I welcome the blackness that overtakes me, as I slump to the ground with a thud.

“Dad?” A young male voice is somewhere nearby. Someone gently shakes my body. “Dad. Wake up.”

I open my eyes. “Zach?”

“Dad? Are you okay?”

I shake my head lightly first, then wiggle my fingers and toes. My arms and legs are free, but my midsection is lashed to a thick pole.

“I think so,” I answer. Like a bucket of cold water across my face, I am awake all at once when I see Zach in front of me. One of his eyes is swollen shut, his bottom lip is split, and I’m sure there are other bruises on his body somewhere. I bring my hands up to his face, and he winces.

“Are you okay?”

He nods, flinching away.
