Zach reaches out and grabs the third bag as I walk up, taking the bags from the small blonde and the last bag from Skarlyt but she holds hers back. “Is it okay if Drusilla tries taking Amelia to put away her new clothes?”

“Why?” I ask, narrowing my eyes in suspicion.

“Let’s just say I have experience helping little girls work through their trauma,” Drusilla, the blonde woman, supplies, and, in her eyes, I can see that is the truth. I nod, mentally filing that away as something to ask Pearl about.

“How about it, little one, do you want my mate to help you put away your new clothes?” Andres rumbles.

“You come too?” she asks, sweetly.

“Not this time. Next time, okay?”

“Can daddy come too?” she asks, and my heart just about melts at the pleading in her eyes. I look between Drusilla, Andres, and Amelia.

“I have to check on the pancakes, Pumpkin. I’ll be in as soon as they’re ready.”

“Okay,” she says as Andres puts her down.

“Come on, Amelia. I think Sarah might have finished a princess dress for you already,” Drusilla says with a wink, taking all three bags and following a hyped-up Amelia to her room. I should feel concerned rather than relaxed at perfect strangers walking away with Amelia, but I don’t. It’s like there’s a part of me that already completely trusts these people despite meeting them for the first time.

Safe,my owl says to me before preening his feathers and falling asleep.

“What did she mean she has experience with helping little girls through their trauma?” I ask once she’s left the room.

“Drusilla was taken as a child by hunters,” Andres provides, looking at the doorway his mate just went through with love shining in his eyes. “And then my niece River was found and rescued from the same group of hunters.” I suck in a breath. “Drusilla was able to help her through her trauma and recover because she understands what she went through. Amelia may not have been taken by hunters…” Andres growls.

“She was abused by her own mother,” I supply.

“And that might be worse,” Andres adds, reaching out his forearm to clasp mine. “I’m sure you’re already aware, but I am Andres.”

I nod, clasping his arm. “Loukas.”

“I haven’t met another avian alpha as strong as you in a very long time,” he says as he releases me.

Not knowing what to say, I turn back toward the kitchen.

“We were just about to have breakfast; would you like to join us?”

“No. Thank you for the invite, but we already ate this morning.”

“Another time?” I ask.

“Sure,” Andres agrees.

I grab out the first batch of pancakes and place them on the table “Everyone hungry?”

A round of cheers barely precede the sound of little feet as Amelia speeds out of her new room with Drusilla behind her. I smile as I take in my sweet daughter wearing a beautiful pink puffy princess dress and the enormous smile on her face and thank the gods that we’re here.

I turn back to the kitchen and scoop out another batch of pancakes onto the baking sheet when I feel a presence behind me.

“She’ll be okay, Loukas,” Drusilla’s small voice says, and I spin looking at her.

I glance over at the table, watching Amelia talk to everyone animatedly, even Skarlyt.

“She will?”

“Yeah, she’s such a strong little girl. But I would like her to come work with me and my niece River on some meditation techniques. It might not be a bad idea for Zach either.”

“I don’t know how open he’d be to that,” I admit.
