“Does it have anything to do with everything that’s going on in the world? The infertility issues, the ocean spitting out all the garbage?”

“Yes,” I say. “Thousands of years ago, there was a prophecy foretold:

When the daughter of the storm and the son of the moon become one;

A hunter and her prey put aside their differences;

The lost daughter of air mates the first son born of magic and fire;

A son and daughter of fire join together;

The dual natured son and the dawn cement their bond;

A new age arrives where Supernatural beings will need to come out of the shadows as a new enemy awakens.

“The daughter of the storm and the son of the moon are Sarah and Sebastyn. A hunter and her prey are Rayne and Drake.”

“So, parts of the prophecy have already begun,” he says, no question in his tone.

“Yes. That’s why everything has been happening. The ‘new enemy that awakens’ is Gaia, the mother of all goddesses. Fromwhat we can figure, she awoke and saw what had happened to her earth and decided to retaliate. The first wave was infertility.”

He nods. “Amelia was born two days before. Three other witches were with child, all three lost them at the same time. We thought it was a magical attack or something but then as more time passed and no one got pregnant, it seemed less likely to be a targeted attack, then we heard about how the rest of the world suffered as well and knew it had to be something more...”

“All the original members of the Westwood pack and surrounding supernatural factions were saved from that attack by Artemis.”

“So, they’ve had children?” he asks, hope shining in his eyes. “We could have children?”

“I wasn’t part of that original group. Artemis and Demeter have strengthened the barrier surrounding this island, hoping to combat the spell. Breanne was not one of the original members, but they have Erik, who is six months old now.”

He stops walking, turning to look at me. “But there’s a chance that if we want to have children, we could?”

“It’s possible. But…”

He picks me up, hugs me tightly, and spins me around. “This is the best news I’ve ever heard.”

“There’s no guarantee,” I tell him.

“But there’s a chance, and that’s more hope than I had yesterday,” he says with a smile which I return, allowing myself hope for a minute. I know that Artie says Demeter’s gift to Breanne was a one-time thing, but I also know that the reason she had Demeter strengthen the wards around the island was because she was hoping it would lessen the effects of Gaia’s attack. Even with that knowledge, I didn’t allow myself to hope of having children myself. I needed a mate for that and was beginning to lose hope for that.

“There is,” I admit, as he sets me down, intertwining our fingers once more.

“And the rest of the couples in the prophecy?”

“The lost daughter of air and the first-born son of fire and magic is River and Riley. Alaric and Phoebe, along with River’s mom Andrea, have asked that they wait to cement their mating bond until we know more, but the closer they get to eighteen, the harder it’s going to be. They are hoping that if they wait to mate the attacks will cease or stay the same, but we still don’t know who the rest of the couples in the prophecy are and the attacks haven’t stopped…”

“And what happens when all the couples are together?” he asks.

I watch as Zach finally finds his groove. He and Amelia are flying circles around each other, both giggling like the children they are.

“Andres asked that question to the oracle who gave the prophecy apparently. The answer was that should the couples within the prophecy not come together, all hope would be lost. It’s not necessarily the couples themselves, but some of their offspring that will lead us into a new era. One where supernaturals and humans work together.”

“I find that hard to believe.”

“Me too. I can’t imagine a world where humans wouldn’t be a danger to us if they knew the truth,” I tell him honestly. “But we’ve had a long time to look at this prophecy, all of us have our own opinions of what will happen. But the one constant is that we don’t think we will be able to stay hidden fromallhumans forever.”

“Like we only need to expose ourselves to some—not all.”

“Exactly. Alaric believes that if we can set up meetings with the world leaders individually and explain what’s happening, we will have a better chance at survival.”
