“Always,” I assure him, placing one last soft kiss on his lips before turning the handle on the door and stepping out.

“Oh. Hello, Val,” I say as I stumble out of the door, Loukas behind me, landing in front of Valerie, Rayne’s mom.

She raises a brow at me with a knowing smirk. “Pearl.” She dips her chin in acknowledgement.

“This is Loukas. My mate,” I say, pulling him up beside me. “Loukas, this is Valerie, Rayne’s mom.”

“It's nice to meet you,” he says, sticking out his hand smoothly for hers as if we didn’t just come stumbling out of a janitor's closet.

“Valerie doesn’t…” I begin, wanting to tell him that she doesn’t usually shake the hands of new people. Even though Opal is the oracle of this generation, it doesn’t mean that Valerie’s gifts simply vanished. But my words stop, and my mouth drops open as she clasps his hand, covering it with her other hand.

Her eyes go wide, white overtaking both her iris and pupils. Loukas goes to pull his hand free.

“Don’t,” I whisper, placing my hand on his arm.

“What’s happening?” he whispers, his head leaning toward me but his eyes never leaving Val.

“She’s having a vision. Valerie is an oracle,” I whisper back, and he nods, though I can see from the pinch between his eyebrows that he doesn’t truly understand, and it makes me wonder how little he knows about other supernaturals despite being one himself.

We stand there for a few moments in silence, waiting for Valerie to complete her vision. She comes out of it with a gasp, pulling Loukas in for a hug.

“You are so strong,” she whispers to him, stepping back and looking at me. “You were blessed with a strong mate.”

I tuck myself into Loukas’ side, looking up at him.

“I know,” I tell her with a smile.

“What did you see?” Loukas asks but both Val and I shake our heads.

“She can’t tell you.”

“Can’t or won’t?” he asks.

“Both,” Valerie answers. “To tell you what I saw would be to change what is to come and believe me, the future is bright for you despite the challenges you will face.”

“But…” he begins, but I cut him off.

“Thank you, Val. We have to go check on the children. But we will come visit soon.”

“Bring them with you when you come,” she tells me as she turns and continues to make her way down the hallway.

“What was that all about?” Loukas asks as I tug on his hand and stop at the first classroom, peeking inside, watching as Amelia sits and colors with Aurora.

“Wait until you meet Opal. It’s even weirder,” I tell him with a smirk.

Checking on both kids doesn’t take as long as I expected but by the time we make it back to the vampire portion of the academy, Breanne, Matt, and the kids are waiting for us.

“Aunty Pearl!” The girls exclaim, running toward me. I let go of Loukas’ hand, crouching in time to wrap my arms around both of them.

I hear Nora sniffle and I push them back, wiping her tears.

“Hey now. What are those for?”

“I missed you,” she says, wrapping her arms around me and nuzzling into my neck.

“What about you? Are you too big to have missed your aunt?” I ask Mak.

“Never,” Makayla says, but instead of snuggling into me like her little sister, she remains standing.
