“We found out…,” he started. Rowan made a warning noise but I held up a hand, silencing him. “We found out that it was Kane and his friend Boomer who were trying to…pick you up the other night. From Copper’s.”

Shock made me numb.

“That’s impossible,” I said, shaking my head. I couldn’t bear the thought that Rowan and Jamie had known this information about me that I hadn’t known about myself. “You had an away game. He wasn’t in town.”

“He said he had a stomach virus,” Rowan said grimly. I looked back and forth between them, still unwilling to believe what they were saying. Kane was an asshole, sure. But was he really a predator? Would someone I knew really go after me like that?

I tried my best to remember. To see the faces of my attackers. Thacker had seen them both. Would he be able to identify Kane?

My hands were trembling, my mind racing. Jamie reached for me but I shrugged him off, shaking my head.

“What does that have to do with why the other team was grinding him into the slush tonight?” I asked, wrapping my arms around myself like I could protect myself from the truth.

Now Jamie glanced at Rowan, who looked away guiltily.

“You spread the rumor?” I asked, my eyes searching his face. I was afraid to ask the question that was bothering me most—Why?

Why would Rowan even care about what Kane had done?

Just then, the metal door clanged and Kane came limping out with two of his goons on either side of him. I stared, feeling panic fluttering in my throat. He wasn’t looking at me. He was watching where he was stepping, trying to avoid frozen puddles. And then, at last, he did raise his eyes and see me. And that’s when the fury took over.

I flew across the parking lot. I didn’t even realize I was moving until I was practically on top of him. When I reached him, I just started swinging. Tears were coursing down my cheeks as my fists connected with any part of his body that I could reach as he yelled and cringed away from me. His two friends seemed afraid to try and stop me. They should be. I was not above biting, clawing, kicking sensitive areas…

I heard footsteps pounding my way and then strong arms closed around me and pulled me away from Kane. I spun in Jamie’s arms and collapsed, sobbing, against his chest.

They were walking away with me when Kane opened his stupid mouth.

“She’s a liar,” he spat.

Jamie was still holding me but Rowan was on top of Kane in an instant. The coach did what I couldn’t and took him to the ground. I was torn between screaming at them to stop and egging him on as he pinned Kane to the blacktop and landed one, two, three punches to his sharp jaw.

I waited for Jamie to call him off, to tell him it wasn’t worth it, but when I looked up at him, I saw his jaw was set in stone. He watched the fight with narrowed eyes, but he showed no signs of intervening. Kane’s cronies still weren’t making any moves to step in and rescue him.

“Rowan,” I gasped when he pulled his fist back to land another blow. “He’s not worth it.”

At the sound of my voice, Rowan fell to the side, releasing Kane, who curled up, sniveling, into a ball.

I’d never seen a hockey player lay down so easily. What a little bitch.

I stepped toward Kane and Jamie held onto my wrist like he was afraid I was going to jump him again. Instead, I leaned down and spat on the side of his face. Then I let Jamie drag me away.

46.

Hope

“It was honestly inspired,” Rowan said, watching me with a grin. I blushed but held my chin up.

“He deserves a lot worse,” Jamie muttered.

I was sitting between them on my big, overstuffed sectional. A romantic comedy was playing in the background. Jamie was stretched out, leaning back against the arm of the sofa, and I was between his outstretched legs, my back to his chest. Rowan was sitting at the other end, mirroring Jamie.

“I agree,” I said. “Karma’s a bitch. He’ll get what’s coming to him.”

“I like the way you think,” Jamie teased, wrapping his arms around my waist and squeezing me. Then, while Rowan watched, he slid his big, freckled hands down to grip my thighs and spread them. The coach’s eyes dropped to my pussy as Jamie’s fingers spread my lips and rubbed my aching clit. I’d found that sex with them was a balm for all ills. No matter what was going on, what I’d been through, I found the cure in their arms.

Rowan didn’t wait for an invitation. He dove down, sucking my clit between his lips and then plunging his tongue deep inside my pussy.

“Ah!” I gasped, grabbing the back of his head and pulling him closer.
