I nod in agreement.

“Jazz? You still there?”

“Yes,” I say, taking Kai off mute. “I was just checking with my roommate to see if he’s available to join us. We’re practically glued at the hip.” I wink at Zay, and he rolls his eyes.

“Your roommate?” he says, sounding disappointed.

“Yeah, Isiah. He’s super cool. You’ll like him. He gets off work at 8:00, so how about we meet at The Zone around 9:30?”

We finalize the plans and end the call.

“So?” Zay asks.

“So we’re all set.”

“I know, but you don’t look happy about it.”

“Kai seems nice, although he did lie to me.”

“True. But you said he seemed sorry.”

“Yeah, which is more than I can say for you-know-who?”

“Ah,” he sympathizes. “Leo the Stiff?”

“Yep. And that’s what’s so aggravating.” I push my face into my hands. “I’m attracted to the wrong brother.”

CHAPTER 5

Leo

I TAP THE PEN AGAINST my desk, my mind occupied by the feedback I’d just heard. Susan Welsh, one of the members who had given her notice, politely expressed her dissatisfaction with the “intense environment and strict goal-setting methods.” I take pride in those very features that she found overwhelming. Starting a workout regime without clear objectives is a recipe for failure. Most people need to see results, whatever they may be, or they quit or become complacent. It’s Sports Psychology 101.

I remind myself that this is just one person’s opinion. Maybe three, depending on what the other two members have to say. Still, the thought of losing any member to Fab Fitness feels like a slap in the face.

Regardless, I owe Jazz an apology, and with the day drawing to a close, I can’t stall any longer. Taking a deep breath, I dial the number on her website, feeling a mix of nerves and anticipation. Scrolling through her class schedule, I shake my head at the names: Voltage Vixens, Gonna Make You Sweat, Shake That A$$...seriously?I’m surprised she hasn’t installed a pole. Not that I would mind a private lap dance from Jazz, which is why I’vebeen hesitant to make contact. But there’s no turning back when she answers the phone on the third ring.

“Fab Fitness.”

“Jazz Legend?” I ask, although I know that it is.

“Yes?”

“It’s Leo. Leo Foster.”

“Yes, Leo,” she replies in a bored monotone. “What can I do for you?”

I frown at her reaction. I hadn’t expected bells and confetti, but something. “I wanted to apologize for yesterday. I spoke to Kai, and he confirmed everything you said.”

“But you didn’t believe me.”

“I needed to hear it from my brother.”

“To make sure I hadn’t tricked him with my feminine wiles,” she says sarcastically.

“I didn’t think you had tricked him. I said some things in anger that I shouldn’t have. That’s why I’m calling.”

“You don’t sound all that sincere.”
