Sebastian caught my wrist as I tried to move past. He was frowning up at me. “What’s wrong?”

I shivered. Why was it that a simple touch from him had me feeling more than a whole night with any other man? “Nothing.”

“Sunshine…” There was a hint of warning there now.

“I’m fine,” I said brightly. Too brightly.

That was my mistake.

Before I knew what was happening, my feet were off the ground. I didn’t have time for anything more than a startled gasp before Sebastian had us seated on the sofa. He arranged me on his lap so I was straddling him. His hard thighs were under my rear, my crotch dangerously close to his own.

A voice that sounded a lot like Lucky’s spoke in my mind. Perfect position for some seducing.

I mentally shushed him. Despite my planning, this had gone awry.

All thanks to my stupid jealousy and insecurities.

Sebastian was studying me intently, his long fingers stroking up and down my thighs. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

“I told you, nothing’s wrong.” I gestured at my smile. “See? I’m fine.”

He grabbed my chin gently, his thumb smoothing over my lips. “Ah, but you see, I know you’re lying, sunshine. I know every smile of yours. The satisfied one when you have your first sip of your mocha from Starbucks. The slightly embarrassed one you break out when Riley says something scandalous. The amused one you give Leo when he’s fussing over you. The secretly thrilled one when you’re reading something smutty. I’ve catalogued every single one.”

Sebastian thumbed at my lips again. “And this smile? I know this one too. This is the one you use as a shield. The one you don as armour to try and hide the fact that you’re upset. I don’t like it, sunshine. Every time I see it, it makes me want to break something. To turn the world upside down until it disappears.”

I could barely hear him over my heartbeat roaring in my ears. “How long have you been watching me?”

Sebastian’s fingers stilled. “Umm…”

“You have been watching me,” I said slowly. “Otherwise you wouldn’t have known any of that. Is that why you had a tracker in my shoe?”

He winced. “I was hoping you’d forgotten about that.”

“Wait, why are you being weird?” He wasn’t looking at me now, his hands no longer touching me.

“I shouldn’t have done it,” he muttered. “I’m not sorry. Not when it led to me saving you. But I do understand that I crossed several boundaries, and if that upset you, then I’m sorry.”

Okay, enough. Wiggling closer to him, I touched his cheek, waiting until he looked at me.

When he finally did, my heart splintered at what I saw there. Resignation. Wariness. Sadness.

He was waiting for me to tell him to go. He’d revealed something he thought would scare me and was waiting for me to go running.

Instead, I did the opposite.

I summoned all my courage.

And I pressed my lips to his.

Chapter 21

Sebastian

Matty was kissing me.

I thought he’d been about to tell me to leave. For him to call out my unforgivable behaviour.

Instead he was kissing me.
