Cracking my eyelids open, I winced against the light.

“Am I dead?”

“Not for lack of trying. What the fuck were you thinking?”

My eyes focused. Nope, I wasn’t hallucinating. My cousin was perched on a chair beside me bed.

“Toby?”

He rolled his eyes, leaning over to pull down on my cheeks and peer at the whites of my eyes. “The one and only. You’re hungover as fuck, but otherwise unharmed.”

“The hangover will clear,” I said hopelessly. It never lasted long enough.

Toby pursed his lips. “When was the last time you fed?”

Ignoring the question, I stared up at the damp patch that covered most of the ceiling. “How’d you find me?”

“I always know where you are, Sebastian.”

My head swivelled to look at him. “What?”

“Listen, I give you space because you’ve made it clear that’s what you want. But you’re still my family, even if you don’t act like it. I keep track of you just like I do with everyone I care about.”

“You don’t care about me. No one does.”

Toby sighed loudly, raking a hand over his face. “Yeah? Then why have we come all the way to fucking Argentina to track your arse down?”

“We’re in Argentina?”

“How do you not know what country you’re in?”

I shrugged. “Stopped paying attention after the first few weeks. I never stay in one country for longer than a few days. Location doesn’t really matter, just that…”

My voice trailed off, but the unsaid words lingered in the air.

Just that it’s far enough away from him.

I sat up gingerly, grimacing at the pounding in my head. Already I could feel my healing kicking in, smoothing away the edges. Another few minutes and I’d be back to my usual self.

Fan-fucking-tastic.

I touched my eye socket absentmindedly. “Was that really Leo? Or was I imagining things? Wait, is…is…”

“Matty isn’t here,” Toby said pityingly. I winced, not sure if I was pleased or devastated by that news. “Leo, however, is. Packs quite the punch, doesn’t he? Have to say though, I never thought I’d see the day when Sebastian LeClerc didn’t fight back.”

“I deserved it.”

“I wasn’t talking about the punch from Leo,” Toby replied, his tone softening. “I’m talking about the situation we found you in. They could’ve killed you, Sebastian. Permanently.”

“Good.”

That was the wrong thing to say. My rarely rattled cousin jumped to his feet so fast that the chair he’d been sitting on went crashing to the floor. “What the fuck are you playing at, Sebastian?!”

“Always with the drama,” I drawled. Maybe if I was an arsehole, he’d leave me to wallow in peace. “Tell me why you’re here and then get the fuck out.”

“That isn’t going to work this time,” Toby said threateningly. “You’ve pushed everyone out of your life for centuries. Enough.”

“Like you’re one to talk. Where’s your fire mage? Why haven’t you locked that down yet?”
