“No,” I said with a snarl, ripping the tapestry from the wall. Within seconds, I had torn a strip from it and tied it around Geralt’s shoulder, I tried desperately to stop the blood flow. I gritted my teeth in frustration. “Why are you not healing?”

“Seb.” Geralt’s voice was faint. I forced myself to meet his green eyes, so similar to my own. “It is too late.”

A choked sob fell from my lips. “No. It is not too late. I refuse to let you die. Do you hear me? I refuse.”

Geralt lowered his remaining hand to the bottom of his tunic. Seeing what he was trying to do, I lifted it. The sight of the bites littering his torso broke another piece of my heart.

“No, no, no,” I sobbed. “No, Geralt. You cannot leave me.”

“I must,” Geralt said hoarsely. “I cannot recover from this. And you must flee, Seb. Now. There are two more searching for you.”

Laurent. Was he safe?

“I am sorry, Seb,” Geralt’s voice was getting fainter with every word. “I do not know what happened. They overpowered us with ease. I do not understand it.”

“No, I am sorry,” I choked out, pulling his head into my lap. “I should have been here. I should not have left.”

Geralt gave me a weak smile. “Do not punish yourself, Seb. Of us all, you are the one with the biggest heart. Do not let this break it.”

It was too late. Pieces of it were scattered around the room. Geralt would take another piece with him with his final breath.

“Promise me,” he said urgently. “Promise me to not let this haunt you.”

“I promise,” I choked, already knowing it was a lie.

“Please…go,” Geralt wheezed. “Do not let them kill you too.”

“I will not leave you,” I replied stubbornly. “I am with you. Always.”

“And I will always be with you, Seb.” Geralt smiled up at me. “Be happy, Seb. For us.”

How could I be happy without them? They were my family. Other than Laurent, they were my everything.

I held Geralt until his chest stopped moving. Footsteps echoed down the hall. I had left it too late. Geralt had been right, I could have fled.

But I would not have left him to die alone. I could not have. I just had to hope my choice had not cost me Laurent too.

Pressing a shaky kiss to my brother’s forehead, I shifted him from my lap to face the remaining wolves.

Jeremiah, alpha of the Cameron Clan, and his beta, Bessie, stood there in human form. Their eyes ran over the dead wolves with barely a flicker of emotion.

My fangs descended rapidly, venom filling my mouth. “You made a mistake today.”

Jeremiah sneered. “No. Your clan did that the day you moved in and believed you could lord your power over the rest of us.”

“We just wanted to live in peace,” I hissed. “What is wrong with that?”

“Everything,” Jeremiah retorted. “Humans are scum. They do not deserve our love or protection. With your clan out of the way, we wolves will make this area our own. Soon, we will have taken over the whole country. Humans will be taught their proper place—kneeling at our feet.”

I snarled, thinking of Laurent and all the joy he had brought to my life. “You do not understand the meaning of love.”

To my surprise, Bessie began to laugh. The sound was shrill, piercing to my ears. “Oh, you foolish being. How easily you were blinded by folly.”

I stared at her in confusion.

Jeremiah grinned, stepping back and gesturing to someone in the corridor. “Indeed. I think it is time we let Sebastian understand how this all happened.”

Laurent appeared between them and I surged forwards.
