“No you don’t,” Bessie chirped, slipping a dagger beneath my chin. “Trust me, LeClerc, you’re going to want to hear this.”

My family name on her tongue had my blood boiling. “Hurt him and I’ll end you with your own dagger.”

Bessie clucked her tongue. “Oh, Sebastian. You fool. I knew you were easily manipulated, but this is ridiculous.”

What was she talking about?

“Please, just leave Laurent be.”

“You do not need to worry about me,” Laurent spoke up suddenly. There was something in his eyes I had never seen before.

Disgust.

“Like I told you earlier, I have nothing to fear.”

Then he took a step sideways, towards Jeremiah. The wolf smirked at me widely as he threw an arm around my love’s shoulders and pressed a familiar kiss to his temple.

No.

Something dark began to bloom in my stomach. Something new. Something twisted.

“I do not understand.”

“I hardly think it is that difficult to comprehend,” Jeremiah drawled. “Laurent is my lover. He seduced you, worked his way into your heart, your home, your family. Then he arranged for us to take you down. Once and for all.”

“No,” I shoved Bessie’s dagger away, and she let me. I took a trembling step towards Laurent, blinking around the tears filling my eyes. “No, my love. Tell me it is not true.”

Laurent shrank back from my hand. “I am not, nor have I ever been your love. My heart has always belonged to another.”

Jeremiah tugged him closer gloatingly. “Laurent has been working for me all this time. He told us you would all be gathered tonight. The easiest route in. He led you, the strongest among them, to the cabin to weaken your clan’s numbers.”

With every word, the darkness in my stomach began to spread. It worked its way through my veins, changing me in a way I knew I would not come back from. “No.”

“You have not even heard the best part,” Jeremiah crowed. “Did you not wonder how we were able to overpower everyone so easily?”

The shrieking noise was back in my ears, but it was coming from inside me now. An internal shattering that would never be repaired.

Laurent could no longer meet my gaze. Still, he was the one I directed the question to. “What did you do?”

He did not answer me, shrinking closer to Jeremiah.

“He drugged the Adamanthea,” Bessie explained, throwing her dagger into the air and catching it again by the handle. “It slowly drained all of your powers as the evening went on. We will kill you as easily as we did your family.”

I continued to stare at Laurent. “Why?”

“I love him,” he said simply. He smiled up at Jeremiah in a way I had never seen him smile at me. “He’s promised me eternity.”

“I would have given you eternity,” I whispered. “I would have given you everything.”

Laurent dismissed me with a wave of his hand. “You are not the one I want. You are not the one I choose. You never will be.”

Jeremiah removed his arm from around Laurent’s shoulders. “Any last words?”

I bared my fangs at him. “No. Because I am not the one who will be dying today.”

“As wrong as you are, you are not the one I was talking to.”

That was all the warning Jeremiah gave before his hand transformed into a massive paw. His claws sliced across Laurent’s stomach in a single swipe.
