Matty winced. “Can’t you let Danny…take care of it?”

“No. What did I tell you earlier?”

Matty shook his head. “It doesn’t matter.”

“It does. Because I meant every fucking word. I will kill anyone who hurts you. Me. Their deaths are mine because they hurt you.”

Tears clung to Matty’s eyelashes as he looked at me. “I don’t understand why.”

I couldn’t resist. I had to do it just once.

Leaning forward, I gently rested my hand against the back of his neck. My lips met his forehead, and I lingered there, kissing his skin for as long as I dared.

When I felt myself starting to break, I pulled back roughly and shoved open the door.

“You don’t need to understand, Matty. You just have to know it’s what’s going to happen.”

Chapter 16

Matty

The car door slammed behind Sebastian, and I immediately began to count.

One.

Two.

Three.

I’d barely reached twelve when the door beside me opened again. I flinched away before I realised it was just Danny.

“Fuck, Matty. Are you okay?”

He reached towards me and I scrambled back further.

Hurt flashed across his face, quickly replaced by pity. He pulled his arm back. “Sorry, Matty. Didn’t mean to startle you.”

My cheeks were blazing. “It’s okay.”

“None of this is okay.”

That was true. I didn’t even know what okay was anymore. Over the course of the past few hours, everything I’d thought I knew had been proven false.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Talk about what?”

Danny gestured to himself, like it should be obvious. “Like, the fact you saw me turn into a giant wolf? Or that your boyfriend prefers to drink blood over red wine?”

“He’s not my boyfriend.”

Danny barked a laugh. “Really? That’s the part you’re focused on?”

I shrugged, staring down at the blanket. “Can’t think about the other stuff just yet.”

No, because thinking about it would remind me of everything that had happened this morning. Of everything I’d seen and heard.

Glancing down at my hand, I had to fight the nausea again. It was gnarled and broken, so swollen it was almost unrecognisable.
