Danny wasted no time jumping into the driver’s seat. He pulled out of there so abruptly that my shoulder slammed into Sebastian’s.

“Sorry,” I muttered. I didn’t pull away though, drawing strength from the feel of Sebastian’s body against my own.

His hands were on his legs, the long fingers twitching against the polyester. “Don’t say that, Matty. You never need to apologise to me.”

He was so close, but it still wasn’t enough. My skin was itching, burning almost. Like I was coming apart at the seams. “Can you…can you hold me?”

His fingers flexed and, for a heartbeat, I thought he was going to reject me.

Then he let out a shaky breath and inclined his head. “Of course, sunshine.”

I scrambled into his lap, sitting sideways so my legs were on the seat beside us. My head rested snugly below Sebastian’s chin, his arms coming around to hold me securely.

“What about the seat belt?”

His arms tightened around me. “You don’t need to worry about that. I’ll keep you safe, sunshine.”

The countryside whizzed past the windows. Danny had to be speeding, but I couldn’t find it in me to care. Not right then.

Sebastian said I was safe. He’d said he’d come for me, and he had.

I’d trust anything he told me now.

“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked me in a low voice. “I’m sure you’ve got a few questions.”

A few? Son of a biscuit, I had enough to keep Sebastian talking for several hours. Exhaustion swept over me as I tried to figure out where to start. Eventually I gave up, snuggling closer to Seb’s chest. “Actually, I don’t want to talk about it yet. Can I sleep?”

“Of course.” His hand started stroking up and down my back in soothing motions. “Rest, Matty. I’ll be here when you wake up.”

“Promise?”

There was a whisper of movement over my hair, like he was inhaling my scent. Or maybe even brushing a light kiss there. “I promise, sunshine. Sleep now.”

Ididn’t honestly think I’d be able to sleep after what I’d been through, but I drifted off surprisingly quickly. I wasn’t sure if it was being in his arms, the familiar scent of him calming me, or just that my brain needed a break to process everything that’d happened.

When I started to stir, small snippets of conversation filtered through the fog of sleep.

“Why are you being so stubborn about this?”

“I told you, I’m not discussing it, Danny.”

“You can’t tell me you don’t have feelings for him. Not after the way you reacted today. That boy right there looks at you like you hung the moon. Are you just gonna walk away from that?”

“You don’t understand. This world isn’t for Matty. I’m not good enough for him. None of the others would accept it.”

“You know what that sounds like? Excuses.”

I opened my eyes, expecting to catch Danny and Seb talking, but they were both silent. Danny had his attention fixed on the road, tapping out a tune on the steering wheel, while Seb was watching me.

I must’ve dreamed their conversation.

“How are you feeling?”

“Okay,” I said. “Nothing hurts, at least.”

He grimaced. “I’m sorry I can’t heal your hand.”

Danny turned off the engine. “We’re here.”
