I peered out the window to see we were outside my flat. Danny opened the car door, holding out a hand to help me out.

I shrank back against Sebastian as panic filled me.

Danny sighed and moved back several feet.

“Sorry,” I squeaked, mortified by my reactions. “I don’t know what’s come over me.”

Danny crouched, giving me a kind smile through the door. “You’ve been through a traumatic event, Matty. It’s normal to be feeling skittish. I’m not taking it personally.”

Was it normal to want to burrow inside Sebastian’s body so he could keep me safe forever? Somehow I didn’t think so.

Sebastian muttered something I couldn’t hear before bracing his arms around me. “Hold on tight, sunshine.”

The world tilted as Sebastian swung us both out of the car and made his way inside. Maybe I should’ve insisted on walking—there was nothing wrong with my feet. But I didn’t. I didn’t want to.

If I had my way, I’d let Sebastian carry me everywhere.

“Where will you be most comfortable?” Sebastian asked as we entered, Danny hot on our heels.

“In my bedroom,” I whispered, burying my face in his neck. “Don’t leave me. Not yet.”

“I won’t, sunshine,” he said heavily. “Come on, let’s get you properly cleaned up.”

“I’ll wait out here,” Danny said, flopping down on our sofa. “Gonna call Leo and give him an update. Judging by the missed calls, they know something’s happened.”

“I texted Ferry earlier,” Sebastian said over his shoulder as he carried me towards my bedroom. “They should be on their way back.”

“Oh my gosh,” I said, alarm filling me as Sebastian closed the door behind us. “What are we going to tell them? How do we explain all of this? I don’t even understand it myself?—”

Sebastian lowered me so I sat on the edge of the bed. He knelt between my legs, looking up at me with a grimace. “Matty, they already know.”

“What? How?”

Sebastian huffed, running a hand through his hair. “Okay, I really shouldn’t be the one telling you this. This should be coming from Leo.”

That stung. I thought back to the last conversation I’d had with Leo, how it had escalated because he refused to give me a reason to stay away from Sebastian. How much was my brother keeping from me? “Tell me.”

He sighed. “Okay. So, a lot of ‘mythical’ creatures? They aren’t so mythical.”

“Yeah, that I’d already guessed. Kinda obvious when your brother’s best friend turns into a giant wolf. And, I mean, you with the—” I gestured at his mouth. “—fangs.”

He opened his mouth slightly to show me. They weren’t as obvious as earlier, somewhat smaller.

“Why haven’t I noticed them before?” I mean, it wasn’t like Sebastian smiled or laughed around me, but even so, it was hard to miss them.

He opened his mouth wider and I watched in fascination as they ascended into his gums, leaving no trace behind. “I don’t have them out around you.”

“Makes sense, me being human.”

“You being human has nothing to do with it.”

I tilted my head, puzzled. “Then why?”

“Because it’s you.”

It was an answer he’d given me before. “I don’t understand what that means.”

“You don’t need to,” he said briskly. “Anyway, Danny is a wolf shifter, I’m a vampire. Ferry and the others are demons.”
