“Yep!”

“Well, I’m more confused than ever.” I shrug. “I think I need to sleep on this and start fresh tomorrow. My head is a mess.”

“I’ve set a few scans running to track her vehicle when she left here after the fire, and I’m downloading all our footage.”

“Wait, did anyone ever check this place for hidden cameras and bugs?”

“Shit, no, there’s just been so much going on. Come on. We should do that first.”

“Wait, can we check to see if those cameras are working? Can we find the signal and tap into their footage now we know they exist?”

“Maybe… let me see if I can find an external signal being transmitted and any footage while that's running. What else should we be looking for?

“I don't know, man, everything, no matter how small a connection or even if we think it's no connection, we should check everything and go from there!”

“Wait… I've got a signal. I’m downloading all the data. Shit, these files are massive. How long have they been recording? I've hacked in through the back door, so I should be undetected for now. I should be good to save everything and then dump the whole lot. That way, we’ll be the only ones with a copy. I’ll leave it running while we start trying to find the cameras. Once we've got the footage, we can check the angles and see if we've missed any.”

We head upstairs. And start at one end of the building, going through every room. Each room has a camera, and Dice removes them all. There’s one in each corner of the bar and two behind it. We scan the building, find another ten, and head to the apartment. “We’ll have to check the garage and coffee shop tomorrow. I'm beat.” Me and Dice head upstairs, and there are bodies everywhere. “Come on, we’ll kip in my room. We’ll have to stay on the floor, as I think she totalled the mattress!”

Dice

Waking up the next morning, I startle. Fuck… I forgot where I was for a minute. I head out of the room and into the kitchen, flicking the coffee machine on as I head to the bathroom. Once I’ve showered, I take a coffee into Steel.

“Morning.”

“Ah, thanks, man, you’ll make someone a good wife one day.”

“Fuck you, asshole.” I chuckle. “Come on, let’s get cracking. We need to check the rest of this place, lodges, everywhere and then get back to the tech room to see what my searches have found.”

Once we’re dressed, we head out to the living room, and Steel sighs. Fuck, we need to sort this out. He wakes everyone up. “Right, motherfuckers, where’s Ares?”

“They went to stay at Scar’s dad’s place.” Viking grimaces as he sits up off the sofa where he’s been awkwardly laid all night. “Shit. I’m gonna head back to Carmen’s tonight, fuck sleeping here.”

“Well, before you do, I want you all to strip out the rooms and everything that’s damaged and throw it into a pile in the parking lot. We need to start cleaning up this shit hole. Me and Dice are going bug hunting, so get moving, dickheads.”

There are multiple groans, but they all get up and start heading for the bathrooms as we head up to the lodges.

Steel knocks on Demi’s door first, “Hey.” He gives a sad smile as she opens it. She crosses her arms and leans on the door frame.

“Hey.” It’s all she says in return, nothing else.

“Look, I know you’re…” He starts.

“Disappointed, disgusted, ashamed, would you like me to go on?” She interrupts.

“Fuck, Dem, I know I screwed up.” He shakes his head.

“Screwed up, seriously? Screwed up is when you forget to take the meat out of the freezer the night before or when you lock yourself out, but this”—she steps forward and jabs him in the chest—“this, big brother, is the most epic fuck up of all fuck ups. You literally burnt her world to the ground and kicked the ash in her fucking face.”

Jesus, Demi never swears, like ever, and right now, in front of us, we see a fire in her we’ve never seen before. The hurt and anger, all trying to make their intentions known.

“Demi, I’m gonna get her back, I’m gonna bring her home, I’m gonna fix it. Don’t worry.” Steel tries to reason.

She takes a step back and goes to shut the door. He steps up, holding it open as the tears start to flow.

“You’re never gonna get her back. She’ll never come home. You can’t fix this.”

“I can, Demi, and I will.” He tries again.
