She looks over at the girls and back at me. “I wanna be where you are. Just give me a minute to say bye.”
Walking back up to the lodge, I sigh. “What did they tell you about Ray and Steel?”
“That Steel got shot, and Ray went through a window.”
“It’s bad, love!” I turn and take her in my arms and hug us all together. “Steel took a bullet which went in under his vest, so it hit him pretty badly, and Ray…” I shake my head. “She fucking lost it when Steel got shot and threw herself at Dante, taking them both out of a three-storey window. Dante ended up dead, impaled on the weather vane, and Ray, well, was unconscious on the floor when we got down to her. Ray’s pregnant, but with the fall… we don’t know what’s happening or where they even are. They were medevaced away. They could be anywhere.”
“Are you okay…?” She reaches up and cups my face.
“I am now!” I lean in and kiss her. “Let’s go home.”
Cade
Tank took us all to the clinic, and a couple of us needed surgery, so we had to stay in. Tank must have gotten word to Bernie and Marie as Marie’s turned up at the clinic. I’m in a foul mood. I don’t have my phone, I can’t call anyone, and I’m stuck in fucking hospital, and I’ve no idea what’s happening to my fucking daughter. I keep trying to clench my fists, but the pain I get through my shoulder is excruciating.
“Cade, oh my! Are you okay?”
“Hey Marie. Have you heard anything? Where’s Ray?”
“When Dane sent Ray a message to say they were coming for her, she sent an information dump straight to us. It contained everything Cade, Bernie and Bran took, all the teams, and they’re destroying the rest of Sebastian's organisation. They say they will be home tonight. She did it.”
“Great, but where is she? Is she okay?”
“They medevaced her and Steel to the med centre at the main base. She took a nasty bump to the head and has a broken arm, but she’s gonna be okay. They're keeping her on bed rest for the foreseeable future to monitor the babies.”
“Babies…? As in more than one?”
“Yep!” she squeals. “We're gonna be grandparents to twins.”
“Fucking Hades!” I shake my head. “I've only just found out I’m a dad, and now I’m a grandad.” I sigh as I try to get out of bed. “I need to see her, Marie. I need to go to her. How's Steel?”
She shakes her head. “He’s still in surgery. Bernie sent a clean-up crew in, and they pulled a few guys who were still alive out, but we don’t have IDs yet. They’re in surgery, too. The others that were dead, they brought back for funerals to be arranged or disposal of those that aren't ours.”
“And Bas?”
“Tank and Dane said he’s dead, but not confirmed yet.”
“Can you take me there? I need to be near them.” I start to get out of bed, but she pushes me back down and then presses the buzzer for the nurse.
“Let's just make sure you're good to travel, then I’ll take you straight there, okay? I wanna be there too.”
I nod as the nurse comes in and quickly leaves to fetch the doctor.
After giving me the lecture about resting and taking my meds, then saying I will need physio, I sign myself out, and we head over to the base. Marie gives me her phone while she drives, and I call everyone I need to.
Bran, Bernie and Dane don’t answer, but I’m not surprised. I call Demi and give her all the information I have on Steel and promise to call her when I arrive and see him for myself. The girls have convinced her to stay with them, at least until they have more information. I call Ares, and he answers the first ring.
“Marie,” he rasps.
“It's Cade. How are they?”
He takes a deep, stuttering breath, “Ray’s banged up, but okay, babies are strong, but Steel…! He's still in surgery, and they said it's gonna be hours, but they’ll let us know as soon as they know anything.” I hear him slump into a chair. “Fuck, Cade, she’s…”
“Let's not think about that right now. Ray’s strong, and those babies, they have to be okay.”
“Fuck Cade, are they even his?”
“I have no idea. We don’t know what she’s been through; if they’re not his, it certainly wasn't through choice. We just need to tread carefully, okay? I’m coming there now, should be there in a couple hours, okay? Let me know if anything changes.”
